Very high Active Time in SSD whilst dowloading games from Steam + Low Download speed

I have noticed that whenever I try and download a game from Steam, the active time of my SSD, BX500, is very high, even though the throughput is very low. This seems to make my whole system sluggish, sometimes taking other applications 20-30 seconds to execute what I want, be it opening a tab in Firefox or opening Mission Center, sometimes even crashing the application itself.
Compound to it the disk usage whilst downloading games stays at aroung 70Mbps, which seems very low in regards to both the spec sheet of my SSD and the speeds I usually got in Windows and with it the download speed hangs aroung 60Mbps (my speed during tests in fast.com for example usually hangs around 600-800Mbps. I solved a similar issue I had in Windows by installing the newer firmware Crucial had available. What steps can I take to actually pinpont the problem and work in a solution for it?
