If it's a fallout game they won't properly complete making their prefix until after you get through the starter vault. Say getting out of doc mitchel's house or out of 101. It's...strange. They'll make partial prefixes until then that protontricks won't work with.

Might happen with some other games. The show of it will be to check compatdata and check for the game's prefix by appID and if you see a prefix with "_" then a numerical only form of date it is probably doing that until a certain point.

I know this from helping someone else with new vegas and it was a nightmare to figure out. The knowledge isn't exactly centralized.

(From my knowledge this happens with fallout 3, new vegas, and 4 and possibly other bethesda games. As said these are just ones I personally know of.)

Spent like three hours helping someone with new vegas before I just happened upon a post explaining that it doesn't immediately make a prefix. Sure enough...the game had ID_DATE for each new game they made. And only made a proper one once they left doc mitch's house.

Probably some kinda weird compatibility things steam has to do. Most games don't do it. Just a few bethesda ones to my knowledge.

Now just using it as an example since I don't have fallout installed but it was like...In compatdata you usually have a folder with the games appid which has the prefix in it. For fallout it made...example again.

It's a good way to tell if the game is doing it.

It was a fun few hours figuring out why it's so jank. I think we also had to set the prefix to windows 7 because steam sets it to xp for new vegas.

BUT If the game you're trying to use protontricks for is a fallout game or maybe skyrim needs it too you need to get out of the tutorial or setup area. Doc mitch's house in new vegas. Vault 101 in fallout 3, etc.

Let me know if this solved it. Of course if the game won't run that's another story but if it was indeed the fallout modding which you didn't deny so I assumed such yeah.
