Setting up a local game

Hello!
Does anyone have experience setting up a new local prefix?
I have done the obvious stuff:
In the GUI, upper left, click Add Game,
then fill out the options:
title, image, and so on.
When the prefix is created by my chosen runner and I try to install the desired installer (the installer that is running inside the prefix), it starts spitting out errors.
I have tried multiple runners, but no luck.
How should I troubleshoot this? Where should I start?
