HDMI audio switching playback devices

I'm having a (mildly annoying) issue when switching my monitor between machines or turning it on and off. I have 2 Playback devices listed HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 - if HDMI 1 was working, when I switch it will be HDMI 2 meaning I have to manually change the playback device to HDMI2 (or vice versa) is there any fix for this? I'm happy to combine / disable one, it's annoying
