GI didn't like the style of rider coming from a long history of VS...
PRider doesn't have a free version, but you can of course get various free licenses such as those for students and open source projects

P(Rider is also cheap and doesn't have multiple editions - you get everything as standard)
PI do have a copy of VS2019 Enterprise installed as well though for the times that I have to do UWP or Xamarin debugging
Pbecause Rider can't really handle those scenarios too well yet

Pyeah VS is mostly playing catch-up with ReSharper/Rider now
Pall of the new refactoring features in 2019 are straight outa R#
Tits not "catch up", there are things that VS provides that R# doesn't and things that R# provides that VS doesn't
Tthey constantly take from eachother
Tgenerally grabbing the most requested/used
Tand some features/refactorings work slightly differently between the two of them
Pin short i think rider is just a lot more lightweight but also provides all the features you need
Pi switched to it because i was having issues with some of VS's DNX stuff, and fell in love with it
TThis question came to be cause I saw a Rider ad on reddit

TI barely have time to code (if I even have) right now
DVisual Studio's free versions were decent when I was on Windows.
DThough I had a copy of VS 2010 ultimate, haha.
TI think its worth trying out if you want something cross platform
It does provide a lot of nice features and is a full fledged IDE, unlike VS Code
However, there are still benefits to using VS proper and you can be just as productive, just with a different workflow (because its a different product)
so it really just comes down to preference

PVS's debugging to this day is a lot better, as well as VS's support for UWP/Xamarin/basically anything that isn't plain .NET or .NET Core

PXamarin Studio was itself a fork of MonoDevelop
TSomehow that's even worse
TI wanted to end my life throughout the whole development process
TIt needed relaunching every so often or else line padding got out of control and code regions/brackets would close and still show the text inside
TBreakpoints would appear or disappear at random
TOne of my favorites definitely was "ghost breakpoints"
TFollowed by "breakpoint on a commented line"
