Hmm, I did give that a crack I think.
My folder was called Preconditions so I renamed to preconditions without any noticeable change.

Do subdirs matter? It's a little nested.

And if you changed it from capital to no capital then make sure you delete your

dist

dist

folder and the tsbuildinfo file entirely because often TS won't detect capital only changes because of how file systems work.

to answer your question, it can be but then you'll have to manually register the path as it wont be picked up automatically through the root scan. I forgot the exact method from the top of my head.
