Digging down further, by going deeper into the file structure, it appears that some files taken by a HTC Xda Orbit, when in landscape mode, don't show the date and time even in the windows directory listing (weirdly, the portrait ones do). The photo shows just fine. The exiftool gives an error. Removing the subdirectory with those few files has allowed the thousands of other files in the 2008 folder to import!

Any tips on how best to analyse it (and correct it)? I don't know why it's affecting everything in that folder.
