I'm trying to understand how templates work
I have tons of images that I took while I had my reflex camera and even scanned images. Those have a similar file naming, but they also have a descriptive name I used as a hint just in case they were moved out of the folder or shared. Example: 2009-10-03_FTD_03.jpg Is there a way to preserve that?

so, probably it'd be a better idea to expose the 3 directories mentioned in the doc to Duplicati instead of compressing them, right?

right! that's the problem. basically the bash script does this: 
tar -czf "$DESTINATION/$BACKUP_FILE" $DIRECTORIES
tar -czf "$DESTINATION/$BACKUP_FILE" $DIRECTORIES

my script generate 2 files, one for the DB and other for the assets, then those two files are backed up by Duplicati to an IDrive bucket
