Right, probably the wording "Globally distributed", the blogs saying the mission is to be "Globally replicated". I mean everyone thought/knows that the R2 product was upload in one place, replicate to multiple regions.

Is there any idea when this will actually be part of the product?

That's disappointing to hear, I thought global replication was one of its main selling points, there are object storage offerings 1/3rd the cost that offer free egress, without naming them, they're also part of a bandwidth alliance with Cloudflare or other CDN's. And one has many zones (12), including for example Australia, France, Germany, Brazil etc to name a few of the many they offer. Whilst cloudflare has 3 maybe 4, for 3x the price.

Anyway, sure would be good to have the team say if that feature is definitely coming or not.

Also, a Cloudflare developer said today that R2 + CDN, means the CDN is free as R2 is paid. If for example we transcode video into R2, push to cloudflare CDN and deliver, is it actually, free?

The CDN is always free. R2 allows you to store and serve any file types through the CDN/cache. Normally you can only store reasonable website content in the cache and not stuff like massive files or videos, but because you pay for the R2 storage, it's allowed.

There's no egress fees. You pay for R2 space and API operations. However, if you hit the cache it doesn't access R2, so you don't get charged an operation if the file is in the cache.

Yeah, where your R2 bucket is located matters more for governance, uploads, and latency when doing R2 operations. For end users just fetching files, it doesn't matter that much because the Cloudflare CDN is in front of it.

I actually don't think they have a name for it, but Cloudfront takes a POST request and redirects the input into S3, meaning the upload is MUCH faster.

Essentially the cloudfront acts a localised server that takes the input, and then uploads that to S3. Instead of uploading direct to S3 to reduce latency.

I don't think R2 has something like this. It will probably be more pertinent to just select the correct bucket location whenever they give us the ability to change the bucket location/distribution.

I know that using a VPN i get directed to a localised bucket (when setting up a bucket), I can't confirm the upload difference, but I have EUR/USA/ASIA (They're in USA, London?, Singapore) buckets open right now, I could do a test to see if the speed difference is different to all three from my location. If they're all the same, then yes, cloudflare would be proxying upload, but I highly doubt it.

This actually uploads to the local Cloudfront point, which then uploads to the S3 bucket. That's what I was wondering about. Technically of course Cloudflare can do that, just not sure if they did have a product like that.

It's not scientific but I uploaded the same file to multiple R2 buckets that I know are in 3 different geophraphic locations (From Aus):

Singapore: 43 seconds

USA: 38 seconds

EU: 36 Seconds

Google Drive: 31 seconds

The fact it's a public bucket won't change anything as you're using the S3 access point. It could be that the server isn't seeing the .env correctly, you can try console log it, run it on the server and see if it prints it out. If it does, that's not it, then I'd change the cors setup on the CLI for the bucket anyway. Then try it again without changing the code, if it fails, change the cors setup on the node side.

I'd definitely check the CORS thing out, whitelist your domain, if not, then it might be a settings thing that the CDN is blocking, some obscure security feature.
