Is there info on how Pages renders a site in terms of (a) incremental or delta rebuilds when content changes but the code base is the same, and (b) when the code changes and a rebuild is triggered off a branch change? The docs on the website are tutorials, so is there anything deeper besides "read the code"?

We're using next, next-on-pages. If I'm building locally, there's the .next and .vercel directories that I believe help reduce rebuilds with caching/deltas? If we call a webhook to deploy again, will those directories be around to reduce rebuild time? (I'm still pretty new to Next in this way, so it's possible I'm confused.)

OK - so we're looking at a site that's like 8k pages of content. Of course editors want to 'publish instantly' as if it were still a CMS like WordPress or whatever. We're discussing a nightly rebuild, which sounds sensible given 8k pages will take time and the changes don't involve legal/regulatory/contractual publication speeds. Understanding this is a tiny bit of info, does this sound like we're not straying into the weeds? (We'd likely have a 'control panel' for editors to call a webhook in Pages for off-cycle site builds, but in general it would be a daily thing we think.)

We actually have far more pages than that, but we also think we're going to partition the site up into a few Next apps, using workers to direct to the Pages setup based on the paths.

There is no caching the build output to reduce build time I'm afraid. Builds are completely fresh each time, and this is something out of our control as it's Vercel's CLI that controls the building, we just transform the output into a format that works as best we can manage for us.

I would say that it probably sounds like SSR might be more a better option for your use case than 8k pages being statically generated if you are using next-on-pages

In case the information is useful to you, in Windows I do not recommend using Xampp to emulate wordpress, I recommend Laragon and the "Staatic" plugin to export the static version and upload it to CF Pages

Is it a known limitation that Next.js pages which are Server-side-rendered (by getServerSideProps) have no access to the (public)runtimeConfig from next.config.js when using the edge runtime?

I want to output the current app version and build time in the html tag, which works fine on CSR pages. But when the page is SSR'd getConfig() is undefined, which causes an Error.

The next.js documentation states that "A page that relies on publicRuntimeConfig must use getInitialProps or getServerSideProps (...). Runtime configuration won't be available to any page (or component in a page) without being server-side rendered.", which is the exact opposite of what I'm seeing. It is available on CSR pages but is not on SSR pages.
