Struggling to switch from slim/skinny to relaxed trousers.

I feel sort of outdated and behind the times in my skinny cut trousers these days. Similarly though, when I try on a looser pair it just doesn’t feel quite right. I like the extra room in the thigh area, but it feels weird having trousers not hugging my calves. Did anyone else feel the same initially? I love the look on other people, but it just doesn’t feel right on me. Are there any styles that are good for starting this transition?

Wear straight fit trousers for a week and I guarantee the feeling will go away.

yeah my 501s felt and looked so weird to me when I first switched over, but it's just something you get used to

My 501s felt so wide when I switched like 4 years ago. Now they feel like slim jeans and I think they’re constricting

Real. I had a pair of jeans in the back of my closet since like 2015 that I didn't wear because they were too baggy. Just got them out this year, and sold them cause they were too slim

Lol I had a similar experience when I bought these cargo pants in 2020 thst I thought was so wide and then I started wearing them again in 2022 and they were just like normal

Blackbird Spyplane had a newsletter about this that was pretty funny. He has these OL jeans that he thought were “comically large” and they’re just like… jeans.

It’s hit or miss as a newsletter but their “If your pants look ‘too big,’ wear even bigger pants” motto is pretty true.

Haha, I’ll check that out. The enormous ones from 2019 are basically what I’m after right now to try and get used to something roomier.

I absolutely hate the way that wider cuts look on me, and I've tried numerous times. I don't like thigh/calf-hugging slim or skinny either, just a nice reasonable slim-straight fit. You don't have to cave to the trends, they'll come back around eventually anyway.

I definitely feel the same about wider cuts not suiting me. The most I’ll go is regular, (like a 501) rather than anything baggy. I’m quite athletic and I feel like slimmer cuts are more flattering on my body shape.

I recently tried on my jeans from 8 years ago that were “too baggy” and I thought I was going to suffocate

I've found switching between very slim pants and very wide pants easier than transitioning from slim to straight fit to wide tbh. Something about the greater difference in volume and silhouette makes them feel unique rather than falling into that uncanny valley of "close to what I usually wear but not quite" But agreed with what other ppl are saying about getting used to it. I'm sure the first time you put on very slim pants it felt kinda weird.

I'm a little confused about having phantom memories of your skinny pants tbh. Think of big pants as a pair of shorts and then it won't be weird that they aren't squeezing your calves? idk

Granted I am not in great shape but the "slim pants looking better on my atheltic thighs" trope soooo many dudes have is also really confusing to me. I get it being what you're used to or something but things really don't need to contour to your muscles to be flattering.

Flattering just means tight at this point
