Would it be worth the price to buy a new Burberry trench coat?

I am looking to buy a trench coat to wear over a suit on rainy days. I've got a wool overcoat but it's too heavy for summer or spring. I tried thrifting a Burberry trench, but have not been able to find a good one in my size and preferred colour. A new one costs $2,500. Is it worth that price?

Worth it really comes down to your disposable income and how happy you think the item will make you. For me it’s not worth the extra 2k of an apc trench for example, but it might do for you

I considered replacing my vintage 80s Burb trench with a new one, and found the quality on the older ones much better. I'd recommend you keep looking.

Why not? APC?

Absolutely not unless you’re rich enough that 2k doesn’t matter all that much. Be patient and wait for a vintage one to pop up in your eBay searches. Alternatively, Auralee, lemaire, mfpen, kaptain sunshine, and frank leder have all made different versions of trench coats that will be cheaper and likely even better than whatever Burberry is giving you

S.E.H Kelly
Trench coat in weatherproof ripstop in cosmos — S.E.H Kelly
Trench coat, made in London, with a very light (7oz) but paradoxically very strong cloth from West Yorkshire — and with horn buttons and brass buckles and loops from the West Midlands.

Worth is subjective. Usually people who'd spend 2.5k willy nilly wouldn't ask a fashion Discord server to be totally honestly. So I'd say no Also the SEH Kelly trench linked above is soo much aesthetically better

consider how much you would pay to wear it once. Then multiply that number by how many times you think you'd wear it if that number <$2500, then no, it is not worth it

SEH Kelly's model is largely to make the same things, but in different fabrics, on a recurring cycle. That exact trench might not come back because they use a diff fabric, but something probably will.

Lots of great Burberry trenches in vintage or secondhand stores for a fraction of the price as well

Honestly, the price is pretty high for a purely nylon trench coat. At least Burberry's is cotton.

NyCo is a pretty good use case for a raincoat. Not all synthetics are bad. Burberry also retails 4x higher.

NyCo? This says it's made of ribstop, which AFAIK is nylon.

Does it matter since it's sold out and when it comes back it'll likely be in a different fabric but at a similar price? Ripstop is a type of cloth that can be made of different fibres. Most often cotton, nylon or polyester or mixes of those fibres.

I have never seen they use synthetic Grant i am clueless on cloth, but this trench is more or less acting as raincoat too

Ah I didn't realize that it'll be in a different favric once it comes back.

It's very rare for SEH Kelly to use the exact same cloth twice. That said, there's good reasons to use synthetics in rain gear. It's nearly always more waterproof than cotton or wool - and importantly doesn't absorb and retain moisture like most natural fibres. Not all synthetics are made the same either. Whilst it's very often used as cheap filler, a nice synthetic fibre can add a lot to a garment. Nylons are water resistant and very strong and hold their colour well. That's one of the reasons why lots of mountain parkas are made from 60/40 "NyCo" - where the warp threads (about 60%) are cotton and the weft (about 40%) are nylon. That's because it makes a light, strong, water and wind resistant cloth.
