Favorites Series: Rain Jackets Edition - Topic of the day 10/10/23
What are your favorite rain jackets? Favorite brands at low medium and high price points? What do you look for in a rain jacket? What brands have been great for them and what brands have really let you down? (Note: the Favorites Series will be running ~weekly as a new way of the outdated "Best X for $X" threads on MFA.)

I've been through a bunch that I've largely hated, including a Stutterheim, which was kinda pretty but incredibly toasty and had angled pockets that just caught water and couldn't drain it.
Be careful with waterproof, it is fucking HOT.
Really curious to hear people's opinions on this, especially light ones. I have a basic one from Rains that feels pretty solid and gets the job done effectively, but yeah, it does get pretty hot.
I use a water-resistant ultra-light jacket for both biking and walking, it's more convenient to carry around, and it allows me to also carry a compact umbrella.
Rain coats: Fashionable, Functional, Budget conscious
Pick two.
I recently got this prl raincoat. It hasnt really gotten any rain action yet, but its a really well made garment. The corduroy on the neck and inside of the pocket flaps is really soft, the lining is a really comfortable cotton, the pockets are spacious
My enormous duster from seh kelly. If it’s raining I want maximum coverage to keep it off, and I’m packing a brolly.
Im gonna try to thrift a rain jacket while im in new England next week. I always forget I need one cause I live in LA but travel to rainy places and all I have is a really thin TNF jacket that doesn't fit over anything.
This is what I'm using

MISSION WORKSHOP
Interval
Designed for maximum versatility, the Interval Jacket is a lightweight shell that layers perfectly with any of our base layers for mild weather or with a merino mid-layer as the temperature drops. The Interval excels in nearly every condition on or off the bike.
I've got one without a hood, but I think a hood might have been a good idea, functionally speaking (though it looks worse to just wear around when it's got a hood)
Agreed waterproof jackets are so non-breathable, they’re even unpleasant to wear in cold weather imo
just bought one onsale at REI actually, i haven’t owned a true raincoat in forever. I haven’t gotten to test it in the rain yet but i’ve heard good things about Mountain Hardware and i liked the color
outdoor rec brands make the most breathable waterproof layers but they're ugly af
Being in the pnw I've had lots of rain jackets. I have rains and Norwegian rain but my rei hardshell gets the most wear cuz it's light and it works
I’ve struggled to find rain jackets/coats that fit with my style (if anyone has recommendations please share them) but i highly recommend the Japanese brand Descente Allterrain.
Looks tech weary, yea?
My style when it comes to weather gear is "keeps me dry and warm". I have a Patagonia Torrentshell and Houdini.
The Houdini is a recent purchase, but I suspect it's going to get a lot more use than the Torrentshell, because it's incredibly lightweight and "good enough" most of the time.
i just have an all black goretex outdoor research rain jacket w/ side zip vents
that plus REI goretex rain pants means i be staying dry
If you get a rain jacket, you’d want ones with pit zips or a way to vent heat. they’ll always make you feel clammy but this will help
You prob already know and don’t want to look at the prices but Acronym has great synergy with yy and ann d stuff.
I feel like my ideal piece would be some sort of traditional trench coat in a wool twill with waterproofing rather than a nylon jacket or something similar
i fuck with the acr vision but i dont fuck with the 2k price tag
unless its like a central part of ur aesthetic
I’ll keep on a lookout, i feel like i have some brands i’ve seen but it’s not coming up rn. I know acr has a LP new zealand wool coat and cotton gabardine coat as well with a trench aesthetic. Price tags are stupid though
Generally only wear a “raincoat” if it’s super intense rain, otherwise I’ll just wear “a coat.” If I truly need something waterproof, I’ll wear this And Wander shell
Definitely the clothing item I've cared about for the longest time. I'm familiar with North Face, Patagonia etc, rubberized and waxed cotton ones too, but my favorite for both looks and utility is: https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/austrian-field-jacket-w-membrane-ecwcs-model-surplus/3155
Also the cheapest one I ever bought myself lol
