My jeans fit well but slide down as soon as I start moving, what gives?

I just got some new jeans since I outgrew my old pair. I went from 30x32 to 33x32 in Gap jeans. At a rest everything fits fine (legs are good, length is good, and they rest on my waist without stretching), but as soon as I start walking around they slide down a few inches. I did have a pair of 32W jeans I was trying on, but when I buttoned them there was some stretching in the waist. It almost feels like my size is between 32 and 33. Should I size down to 32x32, or just wear a belt or have them altered?

Wear a belt They’ll shrink when you wash them too

I'll toss them in the wash, and wear a belt as needed. I've been notoriously bad about finding my size for clothes, so I wasn't sure. Thanks Quick follow up on this: hot, warm, or cold water? And air dry, or low heat/no heat in the dryer?

High heat seems like a lot for me. What about warm water, and low heat? I'd rather do a few washes to get it right than one hot one and risk too much shrinking. Or even hot water and air drying?

Everything gets a cold/cold cycle for me to reduce the risk of shrink and fabric damage. My dryer has a "delicates" setting that does cold with a short blast of medium/warm air to finish. Also, don't ruin "good" selvedge denim in the dryer. Always hang dry or you risk getting weird, forced tumble fades.

How does the dryer affect the selvage stitch? Do you mean raw denim?

It doesn't affect the selvedge any differently. Mostly just a proxy for $$$ clothing in this case I think

Not the selvedge stitch per se, but raw (unsanforized or sanforized, not pre-faded) denim can be “ruined” by washing and drying in a machine with tumble dry. Even cheap raw denim like UNIQLO or Unbranded can get some weird fades in a tumble cycle.

high/high is fine for gap denim, they might shrink a little the first time but jeans stretch back out they aren't a wool sweater $35 denim isn't really worth babying

Just turn your jeans inside out before you wash and dry them and don’t do a dryer cycle the first time and they’ll be fine. These pics are from 2020; purchase years labeled and all of them were thrown in the dryer many times
