thoughts on merrell moab mids for a chunky/technical winter shoe?
used to wear a pair of these for hiking, and i think i could work well for nyc winter with oversized carhartt/nudie tuff tony pants, etc.

There are some cool colourways of the Mesa Luxe versions but the ones in the picture look pretty bad.
those shoes remind me of my german geology professor, and not in a positive way. hard no
super difficult to pull off shoes like these in an urban context.
I'd rather choose some retro hikers (Diemme, Fracap, Danner, I think Morjas does some as well).
also all that fabric isn't really suitable for wet snow; I'd definitely choose a proper leather shoe / boot.
I feel like the retro hiker look is a bit played out, and I'm looking for something a bit more technical and "ugly" -- but I do agree that these might be a bit too utilitarian. I do like the Mesa Luxe designs, and I feel like they strike a nice in-between
At the very least, in my experience hiking on muddy trails in east tennessee and upstate ny, moab's and especially the goretex lines, are pretty well sealed against the elements
yeah that is true; diemme has some nice modern updates of their tradtional shoes/ boots that might suit your style better.
mh, that's not really my experience but I also live in a very wet area.
My dad and every other local contractor/handymen wears these they are certainly utilitarian
i’ve never owned these but i disagree with the above comments, i think these could be pulled off well with a retro gorpcore aesthetic (blue jeans and a fleece for example)
not sure how they’d hold up in winter though, looks like they’d definitely need some waterproofing spray at the very least
https://www.fieldmag.com/articles/what-is-gorpcore-guide ; it's such fine line between looking edgy and cool and looking dorky, especially if combined with carhartts and jeans.

yeah that’s true, styling them is key 🔑
I like shoes like this and brown and orange is a cool combo actually. I don't think there are hard rules here so long as you're confident you can work them into your fits without looking like you just got off work without changing your shoes lol ie intentionality.
Agreed there might be better (even considerably better or more intentional) colorways but I think the chunkiness plus comfort plus silhouette of hiking boots is just lovely. Moab mids no exception
