How to get 70's British trousers

I want 70's British trousers. There are two reasons for this: Firstly, I've heard that British Bespoke is robustly made; Secondly, I prefer thicker, heavier fabrics rather than the thin fabrics of modern trousers. I'm living in South Korea so, what websites and apps do you recommend? Please let me know if I have identified anything wrong.

So neither of those pictures are from the 1970s. The second picture is from the 1950s. I would search for vintage British fashion. If you’re looking specifically for bespoke, add some of the names of Savile Row tailors to your search. That being said, trousers with fabric weights like that are still being made today

Sorry for my ignorance. If possible, please provide a photo from the 70s. But the texture of the fabric should look like the picture above. What brand of trousers are still made in fabrics like the ones above today? What is the name of the product again? What is the name of the fabric?

The bottom trousers are probably either denim, heavy twill or canvas. Plenty of brands still make clothes in those fabrics and a huge array of price points. Traiditional british suiting fabrics are still around. You might want to look for tweed, flannel, cavalry twill, worsted wool, birdseye, herringbone and sharkskin patterns or fabrics.

Cordings makes tailored clothing in a more trad british style, though their fits seem quite slim at the moment: https://www.cordings.co.uk/menswear

What is canvas? Are you referring to the canvas-like fabric of superga trainers? Does 'heavy twill' refer to tweed fabric? I was told by a fitter at a local tailor that tweed fabrics are not recommended as they fall off the knees, is this true? If possible, I would prefer a woollen material for trousers.

Canvas is a weave, it is normally made from cotton and occassionally linen. You will see it in shoes, aprons and heavy duty clothing for doing manual labour. Heavy Twill is another weave that can be made from different fibres including cotton and wool. Denim is technically a twill. Tweed is a number of types of woolen fabric. I don't know what "fall off the knees" means in this context.

This is typical British 70s style. Old Town is so rad. It’s where Monty Don buys his clothes.

I'll check out the canvas trousers. isn't twill weave the name of the weave and tweed is twill weave made from yarns spun from Scottish wool? thank you!!

tweed can be a plain weave too. Sometimes herringbone. Donegal (Irish) tweed is often a plain weave. Harris (Scottish) Tweed is often seen in herringbone.

That being said, I don't know what it means for my knees to fall off. I will check with the tailor next time. Sorry. I didn't know that even plain weave is tweed. Donegal (Irish) tweed I will check it out. I want to buy wool twill trousers as a test, what is the most cosy? Vintage clothes? Fast fashion brands? Preferably British made.

British made isn’t going to be fast fashion. A very good pair of British made trousers, off the rack, will be quite expensive. I would look to vintage.

Most wool trousers you'll see are going to be wool twill, I'd just buy them locally and not worry about "British Made" for a test pair. If you stick to British Made, you might spend a lot of money for something you don't like and it doesn't seem like you've got a particularly clear idea of what you actually want just yet/

Where do you see British trousers coming mixed in with the vintage?

Apologies, I’m not sure what you’re asking. If you want vintage clothing made in the UK, I would search for vintage stores in London that have websites. But as @cdfchopper says, you probably shouldn’t spend a lot of money until you have a clear idea of what you want.

A local tailor makes one pair of trousers for about 179222.04KRW, do you think that is the market price?

I have no idea what the market price in your market is.

Orvis Signature Tweed on ebay Fairly certain both Beams and Ships sell tweed trousers Tons of entry level companies like j crew and bonobos and asos sell tweed trousers too. Whether they are good enough I cannot say Probably every high end british maker sells excellent pants like you want. Oxxford for example. Tweed, worsted flannel, woolen flannel, and heavyweight wool (twill, cavalry twill, gabardine, whipcord, herringbone). Search for those. Italians and Americans make that too. The now defunct Hertling did, lots of collaborations there like with Epaulet Spier & Mackay makes some very affordable flannel trousers For tweed, my ebay search is: (Shetland, harris, donegal, fox brothers, abraham moon) I PROMISE you that while the vintage stuff is great, stuff being made today or within the past few years is often excellent quality. As far as vintage style, you want a full cut and mid to high rise. So for example for me who wears a 32x30 trouser usually, that means a 11-13" rise, an 8"+ leg opening (8" isn't super full, 9 inch is pretty full cut), and also often cuffs. Those measurements change at different sizes of course and it's all personal preference so don't use it as a rule, just my guide.

My understanding is that british fabric makers/mills such as abraham moon, brisbane moss, fox brothers have a good reputation, as well as things like harris tweed, and donegal tweed. So those might be specific types of fabric makers to look for, as well as what your tailor means when he says 'british trousers'

People used to hype Oxxford like it’s fine tailoring, but it’s more of a decent clothing factory that remains in relevant due to survivorship and the PR strategies of Tom James.
