what’s something you bought because you liked it in concept, but when you got it for yourself you realized it didn’t work for you?

i really like the idea of denim but i've honestly disliked my jacket and especially my jeans. i think it's because i specifically like a light wash. i still like the idea of it but don't think i'd wear it. i just get easily baited looking at the cool shit on r/rawdenim
the lady white co split crewneck and chore coats
i kind of want to revisit denim but just finding the right cut i want makes it hard. Also been preferring elastic waistbands recently
Yea same. Like denim jackets look so good on other people, and I even went and searched for a cut that fit the way I wanted it to, but at the end of the day I just don’t like to wear denim jackets 🤷♂️
similarly chinos though i think im starting to go back to that trousers wise
nearly everything that was hypebeast streetwear from 5-6 years ago. Some Cav Empt tees and sweatshirts, Supreme, CDG Play, etc. learned very fast that this just didn't feel comfortable for me to wear
literally anything that's not in an extremely soft cozy fabric. I spend every hour of every day wearing cozy clothes and yet i'm constantly getting suckered by stiff, rough materials because I like the way they're styled online
nice crisp pant break? good starchy buttonup? sounds amazing in theory
feels like cardboard when i'm wearing it
thats why i just kinda gave up on wool sweaters. even alpaca i found uncomfortable
Half the shoes I buy I wear once
And then force myself to wear it again
I really want to wear chore coats but they just don’t look right when I wear them
Its so funny I'm the exact opposite of this. I hate wearing soft materials, can't stand cashmere, etc. It just makes me nervous I'm going to damage it. I like things to have some heft and shape. Although it can go too far, I have an EG ripstop CPO that I never wear because it just feels too harsh and stiff. But most canvas, thick cotton twill, denim, stiff chunky knits, etc. is my fav.
It's the collar area for me! I'm sure there's one out there for me but the ones I tried on I had to resell or return
I just find they look really square on me and at the end of the day prefer a barn coat style more
Oh yeah 100% the squareness of it too put me off
Mohair cardigans. Way too itchy and they were bulkier than I thought they’d be.
I also recently got RM Williams after wearing Blundstones for years and I have to be honest and say I hate RM Williams..
I need to stop buying high-waisted anything because I be bloatin with my IBS
😭😭😭 so real
Why do u say that?
I’ve never owned rm Williams so I’m curious
I might like the gardener more but the craftsman is way too slim and I don’t like how hard the sole is compared to blundstones
I wear boots to work so I want comfortable ones
Real asf
Oooh fair, I think breaking the sole in might soften them and get it to be more comfortable
But I do agree I like the blundstones profile more
I bought used ones
Maybe you got a reaaaaally good deal and they’re basically new? 😳
Definitely shoes. I have 20 plus pairs and I've worn around 3 or 4 of them the past few years. I've come to appreciate that I value comfort above anything else and most shoes (Nikes lol) just aren't comfortable to me at all.
I often get seduced by the uniqueness of the garments I find on ebay/yjp and spring to purchase them because I feel like I’ll never find something like it again. Incorporating stuff into my wardobe becomes a different challenge since i don’t buy strategically, harder for me to fill thoes gaps that allow for the individual pieces to look good in an outfit. For example my https://discord.com/channels/1116793467654381685/1116800072093532191/1174370215950307328 today these pants I’ve been struggling to dress. They may end up in the sewing pile, i think this length is a hard one.
Got any tips for finding cozy fabrics? I’ve also found myself wearing sandpaper because it looked cool online
yeah spend a ton of money on shit and then get rid of all the stuff that you don't like wearing
If done correctly this process will take 2-3 years and will be a significant drain on your bank balance and mental health
this is the way
honestly for me just cotton is the most comfortable since the comfort is more about fit
tencel and silk i kinda find uncomfortable by the way it droops
can't go wrong with cotton
There's so much variance too
My saucezhan fatigues feels like wearing cardboard
But the needles fatigue feels like sweatpants
I really liked black service boots in theory, ordered them 1 year ago, wore them twice, and just sold them
this pic absolutely lived in my head for a while
I tried to work them into some "softer" monochrome fits but it's just not me
I just got some jeans for the first time in years actually, not here yet but being balloon pants will greatly offset the jean discomfort 👍
i just don't vibe with denim jackets. I've had so many over the years in basically every wash and i'm sure i loved them when i find/buy them but i always end up selling or donating them after a few months. not sure why
Relaxed fit pants for me, I bought a few pairs last year but ended up hardly ever wearing them once the novelty wore off
thermals look so comfy and right up my alley but not really a fan of how they drape either. couldnt find one that fits the way id like, which doesnt seem possible since i like wider fits but most are either slim or just drapes and ends up looking slim
lots of stuff that falls in this category for me (impulse buyer problems). probably would help if i actually tried stuff on in the store before buying, but i live in a convenient enough area where i can easily return stuff. maybe most common are the things i buy online with no prior brand experience and i get because it looks good in the photos. i guess online shopping in general is a crapshoot for me because things dont always fit the way i want and most retailers dont have specific measurements listed. also have gone through a few dozen pairs of jeans to find brands/cuts that fit me the way i like - the ones that dont work out just get sold after trying them for a month or two.
That feels like a functional thing though, the whole purpose is to trap air next to your skin to provide warmth
oh did not think of that, just conceptually like waffle knit stuff so my brain just put it as that and didnt consider the functionality
I definitely agree with all the shoe comments, I have like 12 pairs and all I wear are my birks

this jacket lol. loved it. still love it. but hardly ever wore it
solid it eventually on grailed iirc
I feel like most everything I felt didn't work for me was either how it didn't fit me anymore or I grew out of it. Perfect track record 😤
I still need to figure out how to wear my red pants. They are so great, but hard to wear.
over 8 years ago but I still have the remorse. They're so damn ugly and uncomfortable and terrible in every way.
take that back bernhard willhelm camper shoes are perfect in every way
