It’s the Thought That Counts /s - Topic of the day 11/19/23
Holiday Season is approaching! Are you a habitual self-shopper? I am. What are some gift ideas to share with loved ones that aren't Grailed links you've had bookmarked since June?

As much of a meme as it might be, the older I get the more I appreciate the gift of good socks.
Good wool/merino blend socks are great and aren't usually something I think to buy for myself when shopping for clothes. So if I get something like some darn toughs as a gift I'm pumped.
wool socks are awesome
socks are also my go-to gift idea i give to others. i usually get looks of like "really? is that a joke?" but i always laugh and say it's serious and give them a brand or two to check out.
Mom refuses to learn what I like, so I enjoy just getting cash from her. My sister is very good at gifting, so I don't even bother sending a gift list. On the other hand, I like to ask people directly what they want so I can give them something they like + something I think they like.
This year i asked for like little upgrades to my cooking setup
Things i can get by without fine but could be nice. The big one was some big salt and pepper grinders that have a satisfying crack to em
honestly not a bad idea for myself, might have to yoink this idea for this year!
a preorder at my local bookstore of Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar
oh yeah, I asked my parents to get me a peugeot pepper grinder once for christmas
it's so good
What'd you get? I've been after a nice pepper mill for a while
Have had the same ones since the college days
I havent gotten yet haha
Idk i just floated it by my parents last week as a “this would be really nice”
Havent done any research yet
My MIL is getting us an immersion blender
I think fashion stuff is so hard to buy as a gift. Even accessories can be $$$$ and I don’t like stuff like “fun” socks, pocket squares, most ties etc that people might get for me.
It also feels weird to just send an exact link to the things I want to people. So inelegant
the peugeot "paris" pepper mill gets my endorsement, looks beautiful, works well and it's got a 25 year warranty
Had my eye on a Peugeot
They look nice but $65 for a pepper mill?
Oh no I am just about to share a pepper mill that costs more than that 😅
there's a reason I asked for it as a christmas gift 😅
I hate electric mills outright lol

We have one of these and it's great
Skeppshult
Small spice mill - Skeppshult
But they are expensive
oh, it's not electric
This seems cool tbh
It has a very satisfying weight to it and it's pretty versatile on how fine you can grind
In hindsight I would've paid more for the larger one though
Yeah it looks really cool and seems fun to use tbh. The Peugeot ones just look like regular pepper mills to me mostly
oh that's a cool design
Oh I see the PEFC wood which is kinda nice.
(Ik I sound like “why would you pay $300 for pants” here a bit)
they're basically the ones everyone else copied as I understand it. they've been making pepper mills since 1870 or so
Yeah that’s fair then. CPs instead of CP knock offs
I do think more general lifestyle stuff rather than fashion stuff is what I like. It gives the gift giver more freedom and being surprised is always fun
Soup is entirely correct that good socks are a top gift of all time. I’m a huge fan of giving hats, such as a beanie or ball cap as well. Gloves are also an excellent gift. Heartily recommend Sullivan Glove Co: https://sullivanglove.com
I'm going to get my roommate of pot with a spout because he was talking about how much he loved using it at his parents' place. I'm still thinking about what I gotta get my girlfriend
I get cash from family for the most part because I've always been particular with what I want
I don't ever want people to break the bank as well so I think cash gives them an easier time in terms of setting their own boundaries with things
A few years ago i got everyone in my extended family maldon salt and tiny cheap ceramic salt cellars from Etsy.
ooh
that's a nice idea
Found out that my uncle doesnt use salt so i told him to put it on his driveway
My go-to request is camping gadgets, though I've nearly run out of useful stuff to get. Kitchen cookware, and now yard care essentials will probably be on the docket
Accessories like a garment steamer, sweater shaver, hangers etc are also nice
I pretty much buy whatever I need/want when I need/want it, so don't really have anything on a list, and chances are I'll end up returning most gifts I receive. My wife and I have been trying to convince our families to stop with the gifts so we can do a family trip or something and share an experience instead, but it's been a tough sell so far
Give yourself the gift of a nice heated blanket this holiday season
I am upgrading mine and it is one of those little things that makes a big difference in the colder months
I know the skeptics out there are already thinking sal man wires in a blanket isn't that kinda dangerous what if it explodes in the middle of the night
Let me tell you I have had one catch fire while on my body and it's not enough to deter me from the extreme coziness, they're simply that good
I thrifted a vintage one and restored it, I would definitely recommend it to people as a Christmas gift
Where do you live regionally? I can’t imagine ever needing to sleep with a heated blanket
Once i asked for nice towels since it was something i would be pleased to receive but didn’t want to budget for myself, but I underestimated how particular my taste is even with stuff like that. When your loved ones buy everything from amazon it really is impossible to enable them to gift you something good.
Nice towels and nice sheets are such good gifts
I’m just going to ask my parents for an LLBean gift card tbh. If I ask for money I’ll feel like I need to use it for bills, and there’s a few things I’ve wanted an excuse to pick up from LLBean
Philly baby go birds
Lmao I’m in the same general area and I would sweat so bad with a heated blanket 😭
Set it on low? Idk man but getting into a preheated bed is one of the joys of modern living
Give yourself and all of your family that joy
Can’t get behind a heated blanket tbh, but this is a blanket I would love: https://www.panchoandlefty.se/products/indigofera-x-bjorn-atldax-wool-blanket-tarot-death-card?_pos=1&_sid=fd941b49a&_ss=r

Might ask my parents to get a poster of mine framed
I'm just asking for giftcards to the Canadian REI equivalent this year as I embrace the inevitability of my gorpcore era in preparation for an antipodal trip in the new year
I've got a reputation as being tough to shop for, so most years I just ask for nice socks or underwear
I've been enjoying buying friends cool vintage graphic tees that are meaningful. I get to thrift. It looks thoughtful. It's really fun. Not sure how it'll go in a few years after they have a stack of tees, but whatever.
For me, even my wife doesn't dare buying me clothes anymore. She got me some Miansai stuff earlier this year though that I wear all the time. Can't go (too) wrong with jewelry.
I keep a list of all my favorite brands and tell family (if they ask) they can buy me pretty much anything from these stores and I'll like it.
