punk inspo

hi guys, I've been feeling 70s/80s punk music recently and was wondering if there were any resources I could learn more about those eras. Something like take ivy or ametora would be sick, or ig accounts, really any media would be great. Thanks!

vivienne westwood kinda created the look that we associate with punk today. she however took a lot of inspo from new york punks in the early 70s like richard hell. a good source could just be looking at the bands you like and see how they dress, altho you might be surprised at how simple it is. a lot of punk musicians just dressed in their everyday clothes or hand-me-downs bc they were poor and came from working class backgrounds. the real extravagant punk aesthetic was born out of designers like vivienne westwood and malcolm mclaren. specific people/bands for inspo: patti smith, richard hell, the ramones, the cramps, the stooges are some fashion inspo from that era that i enjoy. imo a key component of punk is androgyny and playing with gender norms i quite like punk music too and was interested in the fashion, but i found quite a disconnect between how the musicians dressed and that stereotypical "punk look"

Wow this is great, thanks so much! Yeah the cramps have been on repeat lately. Curious to know more about what you mean by the disconnect? I don't think I'd go full punk but I'd combine it with other things I like

"@punk_behind_the_iron_curtion" is a good insta acc to follow too I guess the disconnect is the look manufactured by designers and look of the punk pioneers like patti smith, iggy pop

their looks were born out of necessity bc they were just dirt poor 2nd hand clothes whatevee they could find

Yeah I'm pretty open minded at this point, still figuring out what or how I want to incorporate really I vibe most with the politics and gender fuckery

yeah. I think they still had some intentionality behind what they chose to wear, but it was v different from the "extravagant" kinda punk if you know what i mean? yeah me too, it goes hard

For sure, you still see necessity vs high fashion appropriation today Like sashiko and patchwork

has the aesthetic locked in Also an extensive archive of just Fugazi: @fugazi_livearchive But fashionwise that's pretty much just: t-shirt (if you're lucky), jeans, and converse haha ha, found a University of the Arts London dissertation paper on punk fashion referencing the Met Museums Punk Chaos to Couture exhibition. Good read and lots of further references in the bibliography 😄 https://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/id/eprint/13327/1/PUNK%207.2_2_art_Weiner%20FINAL.pdf

The book, Please Kill Me is a wonderful account of punk. There is some talk about fashion but mostly about people and bands.
