Leather shoe sizing is a whole thing, prepare for a pain in the ass
ideally you should figure out your brannock size and try shit on, since Allen Edmonds and most leather shoe companies use different lasts on their shoes, and they're not all gonna fit the same
A leather shoe that fits well also feels different than a sneaker that fits well. That's all I got, the shoe nerds can expand more
All that being said, a shoe that fits decent like a 6/10 isn't the end of the world, I still wear some of my poorly fitting ones out if I know I'm not going to be walking a ton (friends house, groceries, etc.)
Highly recommend trying loafers on in store. This will also make it so sizing isn't really a question, you'll know what fits right.
In general, you need a brannock device, for both feet. There's an official guide on how to use it. Make sure you stand, in socks, and take a good photo, because it's easy to read upside-down.
Sneakers tend not to fit like the brannock device would imply. For leather shoes, various companies have various shapes (lasts) which all are said to fit either true-to-size, or somewhat up or down (eg, 1/2 size up, 1/2 size down, sometimes people will say 'ehh more like 1/4 size up'). Some shoes are more forgiving of being not quite right, some are less. Loafers if you don't get them right will slip out. And sometimes the shape of the loafer is just wrong for your feet, which is why you really wanna try on in person. Even if you follow the prescirbed formula for brannock sizes correctly, some shoes are just wrong for your feet and for loafers there's a too-high chance of basically an unwearable shoe.
why cant this be straight forward haha
at least like Beckett Simonon or Thursday when they outright say that their shoe is half a size down
The internet has spoiled us. The idea of buying a pair of shoes, sight unseen, is either crazy or miraculous. I suggest you try a pair on, if you can, and save the hassle of exchanging.
Also worth mentioning that while you typically size down for leather shoes, you often size UP for sneakers
I wear 10.5 in running shoes, but 8.5 or 9 for Allen Edmonds. My Brannock size is 9.25C.
Well the closest AE place is like an hour away
I'll take the risk on a 9 lmao
I'll bet they will be too big
I'd recommend at least visiting a local shoe store and getting your Brannock measurement
Good call actually
The problem with this is that essentially, it's "a half size down" for the lowest-common-denominator buyer, which if you're lucky is you, but may not be. Heel width, ball width, heel to ball, heel to toe measurements are all standard enough (though even then, most sell shoes without heel width explicit or selectable), but then there's a bunch of other things like how wide the toe box is, the toe box shape, how much volume there is for the top of your foot, the arch support, etc. A shoe might be exactly your size and not fit. The difference is, a higher end shoe company will try to fit you into a half dozen different lasts, whereas BS for example, you get what you get and if it doesn't fit you return it and buy elsewhere.
For BS, I went a half size down or so from my sneakers and the fit is okay. But that's a full size up from my brannock size. I would need to pull the shoes out and re-assess how good the fit is actually now that I know more. On the flip side, when I went to the Alden store, their Hampton last (which is my favorite for oxfords and derbys) fit me dead on true to size. Who's got it more correct? /shrug the important thing is really who can fit you best, and if you can ideally try the shoes on to fit best, and then if they sell what you like at a price you can agree on.
Ok so
Got super lucky with the local Nordstrom Rack. And a 9 fit me like a glove
Hurrah!
yeah i couldnt believe my eyes either
almost lost it too because some worker decided to put it somewhere else
but managed to find it
Yeah, Allen Edmonds at Nordstrom Rack is a great little secret.
