Where to shop + how to accessorize
Recently got back into fashion, these are the vibes I've been going with (lots of dark academia inspiration, with some androgyny). I'm not sure where to look for more clothes like this, and would also like to add some accessorizing (something a little bit edgy but still cohesive, just a little throwback to my edgy goth teenager years). Would also love shoe recommendations!

May I suggest a beret for slightly edgy but cohesive with a preppy look?
Also you might try Jcrew for more clothes in this style
Check out ivy/prep style and buy dark colored versions of things you like.
and don't wear berets
you need to give a budget for better shopping advice
for shoes try derbies or loafers. Easy way to accessorize would be a chain or something
"broke college student" budget - i buy things when i have extra spending money lol
ivy is pretty thriftable
lol, luckily this style can be found used relatively easily. definetly check out https://malefashionadvice.substack.com/p/secondhand-shopping-guide-motivation

raisin shares my braincell and beat me to it
thank you lol
i've looked at my local goodwill and it's mostly like... beach mom stuff, i'll try some other places
youre not gonna find drakes or alden on a college budget but secondhand ocbd's and chinos are a dime a dozen
shopping used online is generally easier than in person
ebay is good, a bit higher price point than
shoes are the real sticking point tbh, i'm a size 7 which is not going to be possible to find secondhand
disagree, it will be harder though
but you'd be surprised
i can barely find 7s firsthand lol
good cheap starting place here is doc 1461s and/or loafers
should be findable even in smaller sizes given they are unisex
ooo okay
plus theres your link to your edgy goth teenage years
decent shoes are def gonna be the hardest to get at your budget, so seconding 1461s
yeah i want to do like. edgy goth stuff but idk how lol
with this style at least
i posted a tiny inspo a while back one sec
i had goth fashion down SO WELL smh
also variations on this style is relatively popular in this server, keep an eye on #waywt (and really, #waywt-highlights ) for inspo
thank you!
ya lots of directions you could go. drapey goth a la joel and yohji, classic goth using 70s/80s musicians as inspo, or go more punk-adjacent. the world is your oyster
probably gonna lean more punk tbh! might do bone-themed stuff
check out undercover, probably out your budget (mine too) but great inspo
For inspo brands (eg: expensive) you don't see a ton of cross over between punk and ivy imo. Maybe some of Wacko Maria for inspo? Aime Leon Dore at times?
yeah a lack of inspo is what's been getting me
I feel like the primary signifiers that Westwood took from sometimes had those elements? The plaid skirts?
I'm really outta the loop on her stuff but I felt like that blended some elements
undercover aw13 is bone-themed
Might be elements from Vivienne Westwood and maybe even Ann Demeulemeester that could provide inspo? good call
vivienne
mixing the brands together
Ann is more gothic than goth, I'd not get too concerned with her stuff from what I've seen amongst the big enthusiasts
vampire vs. witch
Berets >>>
Your fits are already pretty cohesive imo, would look for more knitwear on eBay. Try to find some sweaters in nice wool and avoid blends. Maybe dip into blood red? It’s a good pop of color to add to a DA wardrobe as it brings a bit of edge but remains in that realm.
But I will not stand the beret hate! I say go for it
No, You are much better off with a baseball cap
A baseball cap for an edgy/ gothic dark academia wardrobe? Also more man inspo
Berets can look good but you can also just look like a guy in a beat poet costume
Don’t make judgements based on gender especially when they mention androgyny in the initial topic smiles
You have to be tactical with their deployment but a beret serves a DA wardrobe 100x better then a baseball cap lol.
I think it’s a weirdly specific thing to focus this much of the thread on though
We’re losing the plot

Most of the questions where pretty much answered, but I did drop some other advice pre beret defense.
Muji women’s section often has some just slightly off prep/ivy type things that you might enjoy
Please just go thrifting and buy whatever you can afford that fits your idealized style and color palette
I was in your shoes not long ago and it'll get you by during your student years until you can start working and affording nicer stuff, by then you'll have done enough experimentation with cheap thrifted finds to know what you like
Echoing what others have said to gather as much inspiration and education for free online in the meantime to establish and refine your sense of taste
Save big(ish) ticket items like a new pair of docs for gift-giving holidays if you can't splurge on them just yet
Do not buy a beret
Beret is a high difficulty item to pull off
