Yes and since tenant.app.domain.comtenant.app.domain.com is not a Custom Domain it will never route to the Pages project, even if you issue a certificate. The same for any other subdomain of app, because the matching Custom Domain on the project always has to exist for the full domain being hit, a CNAME like this does not work.

That is correct if you intend to use a wildcard, yes. You will need to implement a workaround that routes requests via e.g. a Worker.

Just a basic Worker script that transforms the request to point to somewhere else.

Like (untested)

You are only running the Worker on one subdomain, not the wildcard. 522 is the error you get when you access a Pages site without adding a custom domain (Which as I stated before, is mandatory and does not work with wildcards unless you run a Worker on the wildcard)
