Alan Wake 2 - Audio issues
During the scenes in the car between Bright Falls and Cauldron Lake, the audio cuts a lot. Therefore I hear only a few seconds of the dialogues. Same thing during other scenes, like the one in the morgue. The audio lags behind the video. It's a really terrible gaming experience.
While playing in Bright Falls, and asking questions to NPCs, sometimes the dialogues just do not play. I hear nothing while the characters mouths are moving. It's quite infuriating. I have to re-enable subtitles to know what they're saying...
Anyone else having the same issue? Any hints on how to fix that?
Logs are full of this:
This game is driving me crazy π

post the full log

You're going to have to post the full log. It's probably something further back than that; I'm no expert with Heroic but I'd expect to see some sort of warning from PipeWire or Pulseaudio.

sorry for not posting the full log immediately! I played for a long time so was afraid it would just be too big. I'll do a short gaming session right now and post hopefully shorter logs π

i've not had any stuttering issues on my play through, but i seem to recall there being something.. but this was related to using steamdeck to play i think

I removed yesterday's logs, this file is for a 2 min session where I noticed background ambiant sounds cutting (as usual)
I'll try to see if I can send logs for audio cutting during a [loading] scene

pretty sure these do nothing since you are not in proton:
https://github.com/jp7677/dxvk-nvapi#wine is for wine
basically you need
DXVK_ENABLE_NVAPI=1
wee-brownOPβ’2y ago
OK. All this is confusing to me because I'm using "Wine-GE-Proton8-25", so I don't understand if it's just Wine or Wine+Proton π
flat-fuchsiaβ’2y ago
proton doesnt have wine in the title
Wine-GE-Proton is wine with GE's (glorious eggroll's) proton patches applied to it
a guy that maintains a particular patchset for wine/proton
basically functionally similar.. anyway if dlss is working for you i wouldnt mess with it haha
wee-brownOPβ’2y ago
yeah π there's just one setting that is still disabled, it's "DLSS frame generation", so I'll try to change these env vars next time
could they have an impact on audio too?
flat-fuchsiaβ’2y ago
ime audio stutters when the system overall is struggling in this game
i havent experienced it otherwise
DLSS frame generation isnt a feature in linux yet i dont think
wee-brownOPβ’2y ago
OK that would make sense
I'm getting lots of "5334.736:00d0:01f4:fixme:vkd3d-proton:d3d12_device_get_scratch_buffer: Requesting scratch buffer kind 0 larger than limit (8294400 > 1048576). Expect bad performance." in the logs
a friend told me he had audio issues on windows too btw
so it might just be what you said, system is struggling
though my CPU is not that bad
flat-fuchsiaβ’2y ago
i dont get any stutters tbh, but i have 32 threads, 128gb ram and a relatively decent radeon 6700xt (not top end, but certainly good enough)

I see, thanks, I'll live with it for now π

I thought Alan wake 2 couldnβt run on the steam deck?
flat-fuchsiaβ’2y ago
it can
it could at launch
but being able to and saying you should are two different things haha
It runs ok, but you basically have to cut detail to below console levels to do it
ratty-blushβ’2y ago
Below console levels? Dang. I guess I wonβt run it then.
flat-fuchsiaβ’2y ago
since you are posting about this in two threads, keep it to the other i gave more detail there.
ratty-blushβ’2y ago
We both are posting about it two threads if we are being honest here. Iβm done anyway. Thanks for responding!

about the original audio issue: I moved the game from my HDD to my SSD (not a big one, had to make some room)
and now the audio works fine
