I agree the price difference is unbelievable. As long as the Dev Board is protected and justifies its purpose. It will be fine to remove TVS diodes on IO Pins.

What is the most frustrating part of getting PCB design fabricated? Since there are many board manufacturers. Do they follow the same process in terms of dealing with File format issues, DRC violations, Gerber file verifications, and communication challenges? If the prototype cost is significant then the mistake will be expensive for the designer. @kmulier @Joseph Ogbonna @Aditya thakekar

For me one of the major challenge i faced during my last design was the cost. Majorly jlcpcb could not manufacture the board because it exceeded their capability, so looking for other vendor and comparing price took lots of time, it even extended the project time frame. Majorly before you start your board design always find the manufacturer you'd use and tell them about the board so they can validate if they could produce it

Most of the time, issues stem from capability of PCB manufacturer, track width, via size, cutouts, PCB thickness, etc. If you plan to make PCB, you have to consider capability of manufacter first. I have faced issues with JLCPCB asking extra engineering fees for capability they have advertised as standard and you may require to redesign your board again to reduce PCB cost.

Hello @kmulier, here are my points from the schematic review:
• Missing decoupling caps at IN of U4. C1 and C2 to be removed. Acc. to the datasheet, the manufacturer recommend 10+0.1 uF.
• The R28 and R29 to be replaced with a single resistor. I recommend 1k because those modern SMD LEDs enourmously shine even at 1 mA.
• The same for R3 and R20. I recommend keeping R20 only.
• Too many decoupling caps at U1. It is not incorrect but not neccessary. Those capacitor batteries of 3 and more values times are over. Just place 100n or a manufacturer recommended value as close as possible to a given pin.
• What is the reason for C3 to C9? Do you need a bulk capacitor? Just use a tantalum cap of 100 uF or similar. 100 nF caps or lower are to be placed close to the component power entry port.
• The same for C18-C41 battery. Is it neccessary or recommended? How many power entry pins are on the U2? A single 100 nF and 10 uF would be enough.
• I recommend to replace R13 and R14 with resistors of bigger resistance. I recommend design them for 1 mA current.
• What the MCU datasheet tells about the crystal load capacitors? I recommend following the recommended schematics provided by the MCU manufacturer.
• TP1-TP7, I recommend keeping them placed but setting the Exclude from Bill of materials attribute.
• The same for J5-J8.
• Generally, I recommend keeping values of all semiconductor devices visible. The clamping voltage for TVS is as important to know as for Zener diodes. The part number of FETs is more important then marking of their electrodes.
• R23 and R25 - I recommend use a single 1k resistor.
• C33-C40, I recommend reduce number of those capacitors. Two caps per power entry pin is usually enough.
• R21 is not needed. I would reconnect it to be placed between the gate and ground to keep the FET closed when the MCU is in reset. Otherwise LED4 can glow slightly or be sensitive to a finger touch close to the FET.

I prefer to work with local vendors first. And have a design process set. This is what I would follow even with pcb power gujrat. And then build trust and relations.

Because if the prototype has some issues, those can be rectified easily.

USB port ESD protection make sense. For IOs, switches not so much as we are talking about a dev board which is used in a very controlled environment.
