AX11 does some fancy magic and does have other resolutions
ABut gamescope can't do this magic

AAnd I've used 800p and 1200p in gamescope-session
AX11 generates a modeline based on an existing modeline and does it in a way where it works
ABut for most of the resulting resolutions that leads to black bars
ASo it's useless
ABut required int scaling, or some other scaling mechanism
AThat means it did not propagate to the display
AYep, the display was likely still running at qhd
AI spent 2 weeks trying to get the damn thing to do extra resolutions
AEven have a gamescope fork
