White Dress shirt ideally under $100
After having a pretty lousy experience at SuitSupply and, in hindsight, realizing the upselling that I was subjected to, I was hoping for a recommendation for a white dress shirt. For reference, this is the shirt that I liked but find too expensive. https://suitsupply.com/en-us/men/shirts/white-poplin-extra-slim-fit-shirt/H6692ESF.html

Do you know your collar size?
Not too big a fan of that shirt. Charles Tyrwhitt and Spier & Mackay would be good brands to start looking at imo
In terms of collars, look for spread, semi spread or button down.
Personally don't like non iron shirts as they feel plasticky
J.crew Ludlow shirts look quite nice
I’m size 16
Most menswear brands will carry a white poplin dress shirt. Spier and Brooks Brothers are good options. To wear with your suit at your event, go for a semi spread rather than a spread or a button down. Agree with Benji not to do non iron though
PTO also has a dress shirt ebay filter which you can either use to look secondhand (if that interests you) or to just get a brand list of luxury shirt makers if you are wanting to buy new
I’ve had a hard time finding my size at Spier. The J Crew shirt looks nice. They offer a version in dobby cotton. Should I consider it?
If you like it!
Read they're a less conservative fabric though worn with suits and they're popular in the south (you are in Florida haha)
Can you link the shirt
J.Crew

Do the collars on the j crew shirts look alright to you?
I know you want to help but I'm asking OP, not you. I want to know exactly what J Crew shirt he found so I can offer him more advice
Most of them no but the collar in the one you linked looks fine. I wouldn't buy that shirt though, it's slim fit which isn't good, it's super overpriced for J Crew, and I'd go with a poplin rather than a dobby anyway
That is the shirt, Benji is correct. What don’t you line about slim fit?
I know I’m a size 16 and I don’t know sleeve but everything recommends 34. This is the only shirt that spier has. https://www.spierandmackay.com/product/white-pinpoint-oxford---french-placket-ry-3150-c2f5k-ss23
Ok first of all $100 is way too much to spend on a J Crew shirt, there are better options in that price range
I agree that I don't like slim fit but you could try it on to see if it's slim fit on you (tho it's also overpriced lol)
I see there's a Brooks brothers store in the Tampa area too
If you're not sure of your sleeve size, you want to measure a shirt that fits you well already or try on shirts/have the store measure you
Sleeve length is important, I wouldn't guess at it if I were you. Do you have a shirt that fits you well in the sleeve that you can measure?
Slim fit is 1) off trend and 2) usually doesn't work well with formal / tailored clothing
Appreciate it. Is the sleeve measurement from the middle of the back to the fingertips or from the top of the shoulder?
Like this
Wow that's a low quality pic
If I’m unsure that I have a shirt with a great fitting sleeve can I measure my arm from the top of my shoulder to the wrist?
Sorry for including the j crew rec btw as I don't like slim fit either! I just saw they had a store in your area and the picture looked relatively nice to me
It’s all good. I appreciate all of the effort and help
And include half the shoulder width
Measuring garments is more foolproof than measuring your body. You could measure your best fitting shirt and adjust by an inch or two if it's not quite right
You could post a pic of your best fitting shirt and ask us if it's long or short and by how much
Another idea, if you don't have any long-sleeve shirts that fit well, is to go to someplace like Nordstrom Rack, try on their dress shirts, and record the sizes. If you aren't sure, take a pic of some that are close and we can help. Dress shirt collar and sleeves size are reasonably accurate and consistent, the main difference is in the fit around the chest.
I bought this shirt form suitsupply 1 week a go. Be careful it's not 100% cotton. I bought it instead of the cheaper extra slim fit one just because of the buttons lol
Okay. This is a Banana Republic slim fit Large. Clearly the sleeves are too long. I’ve included the tag.
you can fold the sleeve at the right length and measure that
And it should stop at the wrist?
basically at the connection of the wrist to the base of your thumb. like this dude
Beginner here, how does a slim fit shirt affect tailoring? Would a jacket on top not hide the “slimness” of the shirt?
sure, up until you take your jacket off. plus it'll be much less comfortable to wear
So I’m getting about 33.5”
Would this be the recommended brooks brother garment? https://www.brooksbrothers.com/supima®-cotton-poplin-ainsley-collar%2C-dress-shirt/ME04536.html?dwopt_ME04536__________WHIT__16______33_____specialHandlingCode=NO&dwvar_ME04536_Color=WHIT&dwvar_ME04536_Fit=REG&dwvar_ME04536_necksize=16&dwvar_ME04536_sleevelength=33&pid=ME04536_____WHIT_16___33__&quantity=1
Go with 34 then, you can get it shortened if needed but can't get it lengthened
That looks good
While we’re here, do these jeans look too big?
not to my eye but you should probably make a new thread to get more opinions
Would it be wrong to pair a light blue dress shirt with a navy suit?
no, that's a solid combo
Cool. I think I’m going to go with two brooks brothers white and 1 light blue. Outside of the 3 for $200 deal do they ever go on sale? Anyone know how to get free shipping?
I'm the wrong person to ask
would recommend making a new thread
