Alan Wake 2 silently fails to start

Heroic shows the game as "Launching" for a few seconds, then goes back to "Play now". No Alan Wake 2 window appears. I have installed d3dcompiler_47, vcrun2008, and vcrun2019 as recommended in other threads here, as well as enabled the EOS overlay and disabled/reenabled dxvk and vkd3d. I am using Wine-GE-Proton8-26, as installed by Heroic.

Dont use proton. Use Wine-GE-Latest from the heroic wine manager

to be clear, I'm using the Wine-GE build from Heroic, not Proton-GE

you also need vcrun2022 iirc, but it may be simpler to just "enable known fixes" found in heroic's advanced settings near the bottom you will have to delete the prefix before running after these changes

I tried Wine-GE-Latest but that didn't change much I tried vcrun2022 before but that didn't work either, tbf that was without 2008 and 2019 I'm not seeing an "enable known fixes"

on the side bar, settings -> advanced iirc alan wake 2 also requires eos overlay

aaaah, the global settings, my bad vcrun2022 made no difference, gonna try enabling apply known fixes, switch to wine-ge-latest again, and delete my wineprefix sec... :p

you have to clear the prefix after that, which mean syou have to reinstall vcrun2022 again

you arent really getting very far booting up so.. i'd check your browser and see if any epic page opened to associate the game with your account this is what the EOS overlay does, you have to accept something there.. but maybe they changed to use the website instead

🤔 yeah on my machine, ryzen 5950 and radeon 6700xt, this works perfect wiht just vcrun and eos overlay enabled and using arch

try also installing d3dcompiler_43 and d3dcompiler_47 in wine tricks granted, we arent even getting to the point where it loads vulkan so .. strange heh maybe worth doing a validate install

I have been installing _47, will try _43.. I installed through rare first and validated successfully there, then switched to heroic, uninstalled, and reinstalled

lots of games do work ootb, some need tweaks.. i think one of the devs mentioned about 80% of thier library worked without futzing yeahhh but yeah i'd validate the install.. these logs are really short x_x

i have another machine here i can test on but iirc this one worked fine of course the game doesnt like it when i play in portrait ahha (its where i have a cintiq hooked up so its more set for art and drawing stuff than games

hm just to confirm, how large is your wine-ge-latest install according to heroic's wine manager? oookayy wtf I got it to launch! by adding strace as a wrapper (with no arguments) I am getting an error about failing to connect to EGS though

it didnt last time haha but who knows maybe some update made things weird i only was using beta versions of mesa because it had updates to mesh shaders that made the game work correctly, without them there were draw problems but mesa 0.24 fixed all that
