Favorites Series: Camp collar / cuban collar shirts, aloha shirts - Topic of the day 3/4/24
What are your favorite camp collar / cuban collar shirts or aloha shirts? Favorite brands at low medium and high price points? What do you look for in one of these shirts? What brands have been great for them and what brands have really let you down? Feel free to share a few of your favorite fits or inspo that feature these shirts, too. (Note: the Favorites Series will be running ~weekly as a new way of doing the "Best X for $X" threads from a few years ago on MFA.)

back in the day used to be gitman vintage, but they kinda stopped making things so not much to choose from. these days ive been really liking harago and kardo camp collar shirts. both mainly for their short sleeves
Thrift stores
Love finding random Tommy Bahama knockoffs like Jamaican Jack, Beach Brian, and Coastal Larry

I wish I wasn’t so fucking lazy about pictures. I swear I dress reasonably well
Red Tornado (chinese brand), make some nice camp collar shirts for budget minded folks
I like some of universal works camp collars
Watching this thread closely. I have a lot of Tommy bahama shirts saved in my eBay account from the winter doldrums
De Bonne Facture makes some great ones
Gorgeous shirt
Genuinely like Tommy bahama shirts lol
I had two that I wore a lot
Same
I'm a big fan of finding either ones with elaborate embroidery or vintage ones with nice prints or qualities (#3 being perforated was a huge find). Think they can be super fun and really act as a gateway to asserting distinguishing features in your wardrobe.
Are there any good resources on the history of these shirts by the way? I saw a book called The Aloha Shirt at a local vintage spot but it wasn't for sale
would also be interested! totally thought it was a Cuban thing but google is telling me that it was just named that in reference to Cuban climate rather than originating there
tw, pre-mfad pic, my knees:
my favorite is an old one from all*saints which is now my default hiking baselayer because a) viscose and b) it's not outdoor apparel
that said i do like the ones by wythe and story.mfg and their close cousin the guayabera shirt
What defines a camp collar? Biggish loose collar?
Its a specific type of collar. Usually on looser fitting summer shirts. They don't button all the way to the top and have a more relaxed fit around the neck
I have some camp collars with a little loop at the top for a top button
Yeah some probably do have that
Usually the collar is cut differently though
Big fan of Kahala's made in hawaii line https://kahala.com/collections/made-in-hawaii
Kahala
Made In Hawai'i
The Original Aloha Shirt since 1936. Each shirt tells a story that starts with our original artwork. Proudly hand-crafted in Honolulu, Hawaii.
I thought most of these were camp collar, but I guess not?
i have one from kith that I really like
That’s what I’m trying to say. I’ve struggled to find a good definition of a camp collar and it’s more of a you know it when you see it
yeah it's like camp collars are a mini suit lapel
Its a specific type of collar style
There can be more relaxed shirts in other collar styles
Especially since aloha shirts have been in production for so long and across thousands of brands/makers
I love my Blue Blue Japan sakura print
I'm ngl this question doesn't make a ton of sense
Its just a style
This is like asking "favorite spread collar brands"
or "Favorite collared shirt brands"
its just too broad a style, its also trendy right now so you'd probably struggle to find any general purpose shirt brand who doesn't make an open collar shirt
Vintage Tommy the goat
all the other threads are just styles, that's the point of the favorites series
I think A&F does better camp collar shirts than uniqlo so I'm putting them in the recs I'm typing up
Its just weird to me cause its more I would choose a brand I like and get a camp collar shirt from them, than choose a brand to get a camp collar shirt from.
If that makes sense
My favorites are all from thrift stores
Anyway I'm derailing so I'll back out
yeah this thread is to help newbies
who don't know brands yet
Portuguese Flannel or Corridor then
Given I have a lot of these from hype or designer brands that I don't think are great recs due to the fact they are more of a pain to buy and seasonal
I really like camp collar shirts, especially ones with some fun embroidery on them, they're fun to wear alone or over tanks in the summer, but I've also been having some fun putting them over long sleeves in fall/winter/early spring. recs at various prices:
$: A&F
$$: Kissa Goi, Kokun.in
$$$: Story mfg, harago
smiles just undo a few buttons and vibe homie
These are also probably the single cheapest thing you can find on ebay
thousands and thousands of random shirts out there
one thing to note about embroidered camp collars, I got one from Portuguese Flannel, and the thing is dry clean only. Kinda makes sense considering, but I prolly wouldn't have gotten it had I known that. So I guess the point is to check the care label.
Pictured in order: kokun, kissa goi, story mfg
I wash mine on the machine delicate setting and it's been fine
weird that they'd rec dry clean only considering it's agitation that can damage embroidery, not the choice of solvent
good call, yeah I should just do it, and if it's ruined whatever
Whoa so much hair!
Shirts are sick too
I need to try and work mine into more outfits
I basically just use them exclusively on really warm days, but there’s probably a lot of other things I can try them with
My favorites are one from Wood Wood with a paintstroke print and a flower embroidered one from Portuguese flannel.
Wacko Maria has really nice aloha rayon shirts. I copped this one a while back
Abercrombie knit goated
currently about the only aloha shirt i own, but it’s by far my favorite. excuse the dressing room pics tho lmao. it’s an EMPYRE zumiez-exclusive thing and i love it to death
