Are long coats like this still in fashion?
I saw this coat in a charity shop in black and gray and was wondering if these are still in fashion and what usually goes good with them

Yeah for sure!
Here's some recent highlights from this server of people rocking various long coats, to give some inspo and ideas:

would you say a black or grey coat is better?
thanks sbtw
Depends on what you plan to wear it with tbh! Grey is probably more versatile, but black looks great too especially if you wear a lot of black outfits anyway
I'm trying to find colors that match my skin tone, I'm pakistani so my skin colour is white brownish
Skin tone has zero relation to what coat colour you can wear, trust
oh okay
i thought certain colour went better with certain skin colours
Nah that's pseudoscience crap that certain fashion bloggers like to spread around to make people feel insecure to be honest
Don't listen to any of that nonsense
oh okay
ill go with grey then
i like that colour more
Sick, yeah that's what it's all about
would jeans and a sweater work below it do you think
For ones like the WAYWT fits that I linked above, almost certainly, yeah!
If you pick it up definitely feel free to post pics in here or #styling-suggestions
okay thanks
If you plan to wear it more casually look for something more similar to the links that tunnocks posted than the ones that you had in the original post, more textured fabric, raglan sleeve, basically a softer looking garment compared to the topcoats you posted
I would say that currently the online menswear community is not really into smooth, trim, single-breasted topcoats, in favor of rougher textures (particularly tweed and camel hair), raglan sleeves, looser silhouettes, belted or double-breasted, etc. But, like, the online menswear community is not the world. That style of topcoat is still perfectly acceptable in most settings, especially if you’re wearing to the office or a bar and not to post a fitpic.
Sure but topcoats work better with more formal clothing vs throwing one on over jeans and a sweater like they asked above
If you want something you can throw on over basically any outfit, it’s better to get something less tailored
I'll go to the charity shop tomorrow and check what type of top coat it was
i want it as more of a casual look so thats a good idea thanks
also random question, but in the basic wardrobe guide it says straight trousers does that just mean regular fit jeans?
uniqlo doesnt have straight
yes
okay thanks

or something like this
Out of those, this 3rd one is the best. Notice how it has the curved "raglan" sleeve seams, rather than the sleeves being joined at a right angle creating a sharp corner. Much more casual and relaxed feeling.
The texture and colour also helps with this
as per your original post though, 2nd hand / thrifted will likely give much better value for long coats like this
I wouldn't spend £150 for something from next
The third one is £60 from next clearance
It was also my favourite
I’m gonna order it and hopefully it fits well
i like the third one too; because of the brown plaid it's a little more interesting and more versatile than the other two imo.
style is really up to you - sweater/jeans works, as does a button up/trouser or even a hoodie/cargo pants. if you're unsure of the fit, make another thread once you get the jacket and post pics
Okay thanks for all the help, I definitely will send some photos of it for fitting and styling help
