MRecommended in future running the equivalent of the check locally. The format check is stricter than what is actually valid.
Just really doesn't like how lines end or hanging tabs or missing newlines. Your empty commit was probably removing a space or tab on a empty line.
Vscode also doesn't help since just doesn't have a well known syntax so it blindly adds tabs all over the place.

F@RoyalOughtness I believe it's more reliable to use
sudo ostree admin config-diff & parsing that output for checking /etc overrides than using classic diff
