Help picking a big coat
I've been going on in #general-chat and #SEH Kelly about my big coat search and I think I've narrowed it down to a few options but I want the community's opinion as well. Budget is high for this one, so all the ones listed I'm willing to pay for. I'm open to other picks, these are just the ones I found myself drawn to. My usual style is pretty casual, so I want something roomy for the sake of being roomy and not because I'm planning to wear a lot of tailoring underneath.
Picks (roughly in order of preference)
---------------------------------------
* PS English tweed overcoat (https://www.permanentstyle.com/2023/11/introducing-the-english-tweed-overcoat.html)
I love how drapey this one is, like a big robe. The material just looks so comfy. And the through pockets are a nice touch, something I only found on the SEH Kelly balmacaan
* NMWA/taillour balmacaan in Donegal blue/green tweed (https://nomanwalksalone.com/blogs/news/project-raglan-a-transatlantic-tweed-coat)
This one also looks nice and roomy, something to keep me warm in the not-very-cold-recently winters of the mid-Atlantic. The lapels don't seem as big and dramatic as the PS tweed overcoat but I don't mind.
* PS Donegal overcoat (https://www.permanentstyle.com/2019/10/introducing-the-donegal-overcoat.html)
Feels a bit more conservative in appearance. I really love the navy color (the black and cream herringbone color is OOS in my size) and the detachable throat latch is a nice touch.
* SEH Kelly balmacaan (https://www.sehkelly.com/shop/coats/balmacaan/balmacaan-in-donegal-tweed-in-grouse-brown/)
This one is the simplest of all the ones on this list (as it should be, it's the cheapest by some margin). It has through pockets similar to the PS tweed overcoat but without an inner pocket to match. Love the grouse brown color!
* Connolly SB oversized coat (https://www.connollyengland.com/collections/mens-coats/products/oversized-herringbone-coat-brown?variant=44013114163453)
Not sure how I feel about the patch pockets on front but I dig the contrast yellow lining and extra long length. I'd probably prefer the DB version in loden green, as it's pretty similar to the PS tweed overcoat, but it's OOS.

@RZ1989 @Legs I think one of you has the SEH Kelly bal? Do you have any fit pics of it? Feedback on materials/build/fit?
I might be able to dig up a pic later once home. I really love the fit and construction, not to mention the donegal
@crocubot21 I think you have the PS donegal overcoat? I found your #recent-purchases post but no fit pic
I think my one hangup about it is the length. It's "only" 39.5" long, whereas the other ones are closer to 43-46"
I do have it and like it, though I have the black and cream herringbone one. I’ll see if I can find a fit pic or take one when I get home in a few days. For reference though, I’m around 160 and 5’10 (37ish chest measurement) and the small/3 fits me perfectly and ends just below my knees
Yea i do
5ft8 160lbs
Here me in the S sf version
I also have the grouse brown prior version, called walnut, but idk if i had full body shot taken before
It was shorter than current gen
Another note is sehk, permanent style ones if u look at pit measurement they on the slim side
Not sure how relevant it is, but certain brands has a oversized look with huge pit measurement make u look like u wearing a blanket. But as long as u know what look u going for it good
Fit is great, i think i prefer even looser fitting nowadays, i typically S in sehk but i would wear M now
Material is thick thick, great construction over all, what i tend to dislike is somehow their buttons get loosen up easily on my coats/jackets
Not a big deal tho
Sehk is on the shorter side for bal. You want longer length has to look at other model like tielocken, great coat, trench and so so. Sehk coats are@much longer than years past nowadays
Thanks! Yeah I think the taillour, PS/PWVC tweed overcoat, and Connolly DB oversized coat might all have that wrapped in a blanket look. I had emailed Paul at sehk and he told me for someone that wears a size 40 suit, he'd recommend the bal in medium
But I can measure out my Burberry and compare
I'm 6'3" and 175, so very much on the slim side especially in the chest and shoulders
My suit size 38 and honestly i would go for an M
My shoulder is broader tho
Hm. If I decide to go with them maybe I'll order two sizes and return the one that doesn't fit
Thanks for the fit pic though, looks great
Sure thing
think it's great that their length have become longer again!
Through pockets are such an underrated feature imo; I only have it with one coat of mine and I really started to appreciate it! I think it also looks quite cool to wear an open coat and your hands in your trousers pockets; just looks a bit nicer than having your hands in the pockets of your coat.
If I were you I'd probably either go with Seh Kelly's Bal or the PS English tweed overcoat.
Those two and the taillour are my top 3 probably
haha check out his latest creations: https://www.styleforum.net/threads/s-e-h-kelly.277070/page-382#post-11750187
very interesting
@RZ1989 probably more for #SEH Kelly but pls y u link dis. Good to know the bal is coming back in a different fabric later in the year (I'd probably go for that if I choose sehk). Although I think I'm pretty set on a raglan sleeve (it's why I didn't link something like the Anthology x PS polo coat, for example. https://theanthology.net/shop/coats/the-anthology-x-permanent-style-polo-coat-herringbone-donegal-tweed).
Haha i am a big fan of the brand since 2020. Been posting and getting people to jump on sehk train. Sorry getting a bit excited 😂
oh I'm gonna get on the train, whether it's this coat or not
