I need like a tiny vm purely to hold database backups and logs. Could workers with for example a debian image be a good fit for that?
CWorkers run using the Javascript Engine v8, Same as Chrome, using isolates/shared runtime separate environment. They can't run images or other operating systems, etc. Most you can do is WASM, and they have no storage outside of using something external like r2/etc

JI'm writing a worker to measure a website's performance, and I'd like to be able to measure it from multiple spots around the world. Right now I'm proxying requests through some Amazon API Gateways to get the "source" of the request in different parts of the world. But I'd like to be able to only use CF and not have to rely on proxy servers.
JIt looks like attaching to a D1 might be the best choice at the moment.
Cfor my own monitoring I just have cron going to DOs with location hints in each region
Ca bit expensive though since you pay for duration with DOs
Cwith the d1 hack or DOs, you can only go where DOs go eitherway, which means no South Africa, or South America, or Sydney Australia, China, Russia, etc

II think the part where you assign domain names to a worker has disappeared from the Cloudflare Dashboard, should be at: https://dash.cloudflare.com/XXXX/workers/services/view/WORKERNAME/production/triggers right? But it's gone? Any tips on how to bind (sub)-domains to workers now?

IOnce your cron handler is finished then the Worker will be idle, yes.
IWorkers only run when invoked, either from a request (fetch handler) or a cron (scheduled handler).
IIf you need something to run all the time then you should probably look at non-serverless options, Workers don't really suit that use-case
