Result will be still immediate, it’s just I was thinking to build a asynchronous way of moving data from mongo (which is used to store data while users are working on the quiz) to Postgres’s (which is final destination)… I’m also exploring d1 (because I need something which allows unstructured data and it’s quick which will replace mongo).

Right, if the user response does NOT need to block on that data movement, then Queues can be used as a way to batch up changes and then write them to Postgres from your consumer.

You would bind to the Queue and call send()send() within your Next.js app exactly like the Pages tutorial I sent you.

Your consumer

the part that consumes the messages and writes to Postgres - would just be a standalone Worker.

In general you don't want to have a delay for this very long-term type of thing (i.e. what if the user deletes their account? You don't want to be scheduling a task for one year and then sending a deleted user a reminder email).

Instead the general way this is done is by setting a task that runs every hour (for example, with Workers Cron events or another service) that checks a database for any tasks that need to be completed, runs them, and then sets them to Completed.

That way, if the user deletes their account or you need to cancel the task for any reason you just delete any tasks associated with that user.

Any tips on how I can investigate why some messages in queues are listed in dashboard but aren't being processed? I suppose maybe they have delay - I can't confirm dashboard but I also don't remember configuring delay to several hours.

Looking at the chrome isnpector, the messages have delay < 1 hour - but its been several hours messages aren't processed.

Yes I know, I read that and though it was “paid” from reading articles before the I saw this page too. Then I saw “free tier” and thought my understanding was wrong. Turns out I understood it correctly. I think it would be easier to understand if they called it “included in workers paid” or something instead of “free tier”.

you can consume from any HTTP client, but you'll need a Worker to write to a Queue for now.

is there a way to add an idempotent id for a queue message to avoid duplicate messages for messages that may already be in a queue?

my use case is: occasionally if an external entity is not cleaned up, I may send a message to a queue to clean it up – but if that message hasn't been handled yet, I'd rather not continue filling up the queue with the same message.

alternatively, if there's a way to see if the queue has a message that would also be helpful.

Sometimes I want to retry sending a message, but I don't want it to be handled twice more. Many message queue can set a custom MessageId for message de-duplication. Will queues support it?

You should always make your queue handler idempotent. It will always be possible that a single message be replayed twice (or more).

I am trying out the new r2 events with a queue and I am noticing it is pretty slow. My process is on photo upload, listen for the event in a queue and have a worker generate 10 variations with image transformation and then store the variations in r2 and then save all the info in a db. I stress tested the system by uploading 200 images (with 4 concurrently uploaded at a time) and noticed that after the images uploaded, the queue worker is still working on processing the events like 10 minutes later. Not sure if this is just a beta thing, but I was hoping this would have better results. Anyone know whats up with this?

What do you mean by slow? Slow for it to receive the events in the first place, or to process them in your consumer? What are your batch settings?

Can you share your code if it’s the latter? The consumer is only going to be as fast as the code you write / the work it needs to do.

Also here is the stats for the worker processing it. Wall time means the amount of time it took the worker to process the message right? What is the max amount of workers that can take a queue message and process it? It feels like it is slow to process the events to spin up a worker.
