Comments on posts and videos

Whether for the post in itself or the comments on it, it is valuable to show people who could be interested on pausing that we exist, and to reply what we believe to be wrong arguments to bring people on our side.
Also it's useful to know criticisms like possible pause failures to think how we could mitigate them.

I reply to scared comments sometimes. I expect it to be low-value most of the time, but it might plant a seed for the handful (or sometimes hundreds) of people who will read the replies to their comment.

In some cases, when writing comments and replies on YouTube, when I return to the video a few hours later, my comment is gone.

There are a few things that trigger this, including links, obfuscated links, and "violent" words and phrases ("it may kill everyone", "we'd all die", "it might murder everyone", "it could strangle you in your sleep"). I think their content filters use advanced pattern recognition and sentiment analysis, but they don't care all that much what the context is. If it's not super bad, they just let you think you've posted your comment, and then quietly delete it later if it's even potentially a problem.

I haven't fully cracked where the line is, so sometimes I'm surprised by a comment being deleted when I thought it was perfectly fine. Or maybe sometimes it's just a bug on mobile or some other pattern recognition about how many comments I post or how early in the video I post them. No idea! No way of knowing!

This is going to sound somewhat defeatist and contrarian:
The unpredictability of comment deletion on YouTube is just the reality of the platform. If we discover anything that is specific enough to be useful and is generalizable across account and channel contexts, that would put us at the forefront of outsider knowledge on the topic.

I could imagine science being done on this, but that level of effort is almost certainly better spent elsewhere, especially since anything we discover may be changed the next week.

I basically live on YouTube as a consumer of content, and I comment/reply pretty heavily on the occasional AI video. I intend to start cataloging my comments, so at least whenever one goes missing, I can change it up a bit and submit it again if it's still relevant.

Writing a single comment is very low impact. Writing replies is more impactful, and easier.

Replying as early as possible to top comments with a brief related message to join PauseAI is the best strategy, but what to do if you're a little late and the top comments are already saturated? Or if the top comments aren't actually about AI? Sort by new!

Sorting comments by new and replying to individual people is extremely easy and can result in direct recruitment.
