I'm looking to test an eGPU dock over USB4/Thunderbolt. I've got a GTX 980 laying around; do those older Nvidia cards "just work" without issue? I've heard that Wayland + Nvidia + Drivers are a mixed bag, but not for older ones. Ideally, I'd like to be able to plug in the GPU and use the built-in display on my handheld. I don't want to use an external display. I'm using the Deck image, btw. I feel like that may cause problems.

Hm, bummer. I feel like I heard the older cards worked under an open-source driver that's already in the kernel. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. This 980 is just something I've got. I was planning on putting in a used 5700 XT.

they do, but the older cards are locked to the lowest (2d) clock speed with no way to fix it

In some very specific workloads it's faster, but I would wait another year for true parity and/or improvement
