so I'm trying out distrobox using boxbuddy as a GUI for it...but I assumed isntalled distros worked somewhat like a VM installation with it's own options for desktop enviroment options and such. Is that not the case and distros created through distrobox are terminal only?

only folders in distrobox that aren't shared are /usr and /var, and I think /opt
