i think the most "elegant" way to have it somewhat indented nicely in just was to use a bash subshell

      *code here indented with 6 spaces because it is inside an if statement*
      bash -c 'cat << BLAH > /path/to/file
    this text can be at least written
    but has to be indented by 4 spaces
    BLAH'
