the JIT can elide vtable lookups occasionally, and PGO also kicks in after a while in practice, but all of these are inconsistent optimisations that it's better to do the right thing for in the first instance anyway
@jan Peli setting up mastodon atm. setup the server, added webfinger to my root domain to redirect to the subdomain, how do I make this actually useful?
constant massive security vulnerabilities i'd have to keep up updating to fix, tons of Illegal Content instances that i'd need to keep up with blocking half of the actual fediverse is just "people who were banned from twitter", so racism, homophobia, and just general scum of the earth bigger instances like mastodon.social block those, but its hard to keep up as a smaller instance
if you join proxies (the only way to fill up your "explore" feed as a single person instance and make it actually work as a social media), yeah random stuff will just spread
one of the selling points, "migrating between servers" is a nightmare because instances can just disable the API endpoints which let you dump your local data, and not everything will be synced to other instancnes, so you cant get it from other instances either
