What’s up fellas, quick question: are there any settings I can use that’ll keep the stick centered using force trim in DCS helicopters? It seems to sag away from the trimmed center.

So I hit trim and remove my hand, the stick sags away from the center just enough that I have to keep my hand there. I noticed it mostly with the Apache.

There’s a setting in effects, I think “balanced spring” is what it’s called, I’m new to the rhino, that helps that! Also in the spring effect there’s a tab you can check that’ll use sprung force to help hold it in place.

a continuation of what bama said above, are you running an extension? how heavy is your grip? Also how strong are the spring forces you are using? The apache forces i find are quite strong in practice, but also don't have an extension. also do you have adaptive re-centering on? that's a good thing to be running as well I find

These guys are steering you in the right direction. Balance Spring will get you close, the adaptive recentering is the final icing that will keep the stick always centered. Negative mate, All you can do is control the spring force with the dial for SC, pretty handy though. Games so far are DCS, FS2020, IL2, Xplane

but i'm surprised you find it so noticeable with Rhino. imo Rhino is the only way to make the DCS viper tolerable, maybe it's the throw range and smoothness, I don't really mind it

What has helped for me is to check the "Override spring" in the TelemFFB. With that option checked the Viper now behaves quite nicely

The problem with the Viper in DCS ist the hard coded Deadzone which is essential for FSSB. But it is a bad thing for throw sticks. But ED translated the FSSB deadzone 1:1 into the throw. The only way to eliminate this is to create a custom curve in which you do the opposite of a deadzone. Literally you have to skip the deadzone area around the center, so the axis start at the point where you have control surface input.

I use a reworked HP power supply unit. You need ~19V with ~10A. Best with a 5,5-2,5 mm connector.
Some people use Meanwell LRS 350/24 PSU. But then you need to build your own enclosure and cable for it.

The balance spring is constant and persistent and will help offset the imbalance caused by a heavy grip and/or offset extension, but it will only get you close. Once you have balance spring set so that the stick more or less stays where you put it with all other effects disabled, then enabling Adaptive Recentering will nicely keep the stick centered regardless of where the actual center point is placed via force trim.

Adaptive recentering will do it on its own, but it is best to negate most of the work it needs to do by setting up Balance Spring first.

With my heavy Alpha Prime grip, I have run both the 200mm offset and the z-extension. With the above configured, I have zero issues with the stick maintaining center in any position.

This is ok because for the F-16 you make spring sticky and override the DCS Spring. So it won’t mess it up.
When using DCS spring it’s a different story.

I just use virtual endstops and axis scaling at about 20%, makes it sensitive and snippy with no dead zone.

I'd go lower, but below that banking would trip my y axis motor, I assume as going so quickly between max force near the end to 0 at center gives it the heebyjeebies.

I see the two PSUs you listed use 5.5x2.5mm cable connectors. Protomaker's parts list in the pdf assembly instructions show 5.5x2.1mm for the socket part, but I can't find any common laptop PSUs that use that size. So now I'm confused as to what is the actual standard people are using, if you have some advice on that. I guess they're close to each other, but I'd still hate to risk a poor electrical connection even if they do physically fit.

5.5x2.5 plug on 5.5x2.1 socket will fit but you also will get intermittent conection as soon as you move the wire just a little. I ended changing the PSU plug to 5.5x2.1

Good to know, thanks. I suppose Protomaker should fix that parts list then? It would be so easy for DIY'ers to just install the correct 5.5x2.5 mm socket in the box instead for a solid connection. I believe the pre-built Rhino even comes with that 5.5x2.5mm size PSU, based on the specs listed for the model number (Green Cell AD100P) as seen in Big Bangerz YT video review. Another potential problem with DIY kits is payment method. If it's a Paypal "friends" workaround instead of a straight up business to customer transaction a credit card issuer might decline the transaction.
