/etc

instead and edit it there

for example a lot of guides will ask you to edit systemd files in

/usr/lib/systemd/system

/usr/lib/systemd/system

but you can copy the file to

/etc/systemd/system

/etc/systemd/system

instead and edit it and it will override the one in

/usr

/usr

systemds documentation even tells you to use

/etc

/etc

you can also use

systemctl edit servicefile.service

systemctl edit servicefile.service

and it will do the job for you
