Why do you volunteer for PauseAI? Earnest, honest answers
Can I say something completely honest? Before I met the people in this group, I was suspicious of pause activism and unsure if the movement was good-faith. Here's one of many false narratives 'debunking' AI safety. (Warning, it's not nice!)
"Pause activists are delusional and narcissistic. They warn that AI is the greatest danger humanity faces, that they are the only people who can solve it, and that the results of their efforts to save us all are invisible. If you use Occam's razor, their story is a convenient lie."
"It's known that AI companies exaggerate the risks of their products. Pause activism looks like a grassroots movement, but it's more likely astroturfing."
The thing is, these kinds of arguments are ad hominem attacks, which is actually great because they're easy to disprove! Just talking to the kind, humble people here has solidified my view. You guys aren't always certain pausing is the best option. You aren't OpenAI shills. These are sincere ideas that you've come to believe over years. There are probably a few of you EA-ish people who will own up to having odd motivations. I heard one guy say he's also in it for the money lol. None of that is evil though.
I think it's a good idea to collect your reasons for being a part of this.

I'm not sure if I should impose a character limit. A collection of statements is good, but so are longer stories. I'll just say if you want to be one of many voices, keep it simple, and to the length of a tweet. #introductions can be some inspiration. Anyone can use these, so be earnest. I might make a 'wrong answers only' thread if you guys want to troll

- it could be put on the website
- it could be used for a video/social media post (mining for content mwahaha), either standalone or as a collection of many perspectives.
- it shows people sincerely believe in this and take it seriously
- The reason can be as personal or small or large as you like
