Is obs-vkcapture still needed? At least on my AMD system (7900 XTX), I did not see it being noticeably faster than the regular screen capture on Wayland with Pipewire (I'm assuming they use the same method to capture now, or at least something very similar?), but I can't say I've done a massive amount of testing.
I'm guessing the portals got optimized since it was introduced, or there are specific usecases where vkcapture is still better?
As it is, I find obs-vkcapture to have downsides:
Extra maintenance work
Unofficial extension atop OBS Studio (so I guess this is not an officially supported solution)
Requirement to add the argument to each game that should be captured
@Kyle Gospo Actually I did ask this before on the OBS Discord, I got this from a Linux contributor: "Under Wayland, PipeWire (xdg-desktop-portal) capture is usually zero-copy with DMA-BUF.
My opinion on vkcapture, is that it has usecases: Allows better "game" capture on X11 Allow to avoid capturing overlays (e.g. steam) if the vulkan layer are correctly ordered Transparency for some scenarios like VTubing (until portals support app to app screencast)
The main issue about this plugin, is users always searching for a "Game Capture" source in OBS, where Wayland (same for macOS) provides a good Screen Capture source."
Ah ok, interesting. I did have issues with obs-vkcapture not being able to capture a specific game, though, whereas with the portal method it worked just fine.
Anyway, I suppose there are enough reasons then to keep obs-vkcapture as part of the image, and even though I'm not convinced based on anecdotal evidence regarding its superiority in terms of performance (again, it's anecdotal), I will defer to you on this since you obviously know a lot more about this subject than me.
Hey there, i wanna setup waydroid on my steam deck and i tried setting it up last time but for some odd reason could not get it to launch, any idea why?
Note: Waydroid does not work on Nvidia’s proprietary drivers, and requires an AMD or Intel GPU for the best results. What is Waydroid? Waydroid is an Android container that runs on Linux. Bazzite users can run Android applications using this method. First Time Setup Open a host terminal and enter this command to setup Waydroid: ujust setup-...
