I have a question about Email Routing notifications.
With the free plan, is it possible to be notified based on the status of the email delivery?
I would like to be notified because sometimes the size of the forwarded email is too large and an error occurs before the worker is executed.
I have looked through the official documentation, but have not been able to find anything that describes Email Routing notifications, and I have also looked in the Cloudflare community, but have seen a few people asking about it, and none seem to have gotten an answer, so I'm wondering if this is a feature that doesn't exist yet.

Thanks for the reply, there is a pattern of errors before the email worker can work, so important emails get buried unless the error is notified to me in some way. I may be able to set up another worker to notify me, but the question is whether the email routing activity log is provided as an API or not. As far as I know, I could not find such an API in the official documentation. In addition, is that feasible with a free plan

In the end I gave up with Cloudflare for email forwarding (routing)

It seems like they dont care enough about this service to monitor it for issues like this

ImprovMX and ForwardEmail are both free reliable options

I guess you could also forward to a temporary Gmail account and forward that to your Outlook but it seems very tedious and I havent tested it tbh

ultimately any email forwarding is going to be flakey if you don't control the destination fully and can exclude it, just not something to use for critical email

Hi everyone, I'm not entirely sure what email routing is intended for?
I'm looking to implement some sort of email groups feature where if you send an email to e.g. group1@my-domain.comgroup1@my-domain.com everyone in that group receives that email.
If I look at the documentation of email workers it looks to be a simple forwarding/analytics product.
Can someone elaborate?

I have set up email routing and it seems to be working, but the analytics looks wrong to me. I see 80 emails received in the Email Routing Summary but I can't get any to show under Activity Logs. I'm using the free service, but I've received less than 1000 emails so I wouldn't think I'd hit any limits. The email routing summary also shows no results when I select the previous 30 days, but jumps back up to 125 when I select the previous 14 days!

It is a general problem with email forwarding, and not related to one specific platform at all.

If you, or e.g. @Robbo, or @ConorS (reaction to the quoted message) want something reliable with forwarding, - then this one, alone / on it's own, isn't going to be a reliable option:

ImprovMX and ForwardEmail are both free reliable options

To get a truly reliable option, you need to be in control of the final destination (the place you're forwarding to), if you want to rely on email forwarding.

You're NOT in control when you use a free mail like Google (@gmail.com@gmail.com), or Microsoft (@hotmail.com@hotmail.com/@live.com@live.com/@outlook.com@outlook.com), or any of the other free mails.

The only reliable option would be:

1. Drop the free mail.
2. Drop the idea of email forwarding / email routing.

Google (@gmail.com@gmail.com), and Yahoo (@yahoo.com@yahoo.com, @aol.com@aol.com, and likely others) ramped up their requirements for email deliveries earlier this year.

If the actual sender of the message (NOT Cloudflare, ImprovMX or ForwardEmail in case of forwarding), but such as e.g. Bank of America, PayPal, or whomever, isn't living up to the requirements they set, Google and Yahoo will refuse the deliveries.

No forwarding service will ever be able to do magic, to make the delivery happen anyway.

Microsoft (@hotmail.com@hotmail.com/@live.com@live.com/@outlook.com@outlook.com), have for years been known in the email communities, to turn the cold shoulder on you (e.g. Cloudflare, ImprovMX and ForwardEmail) from one day to another, and allegedly (according to the victims, at least), without a good reason to do so.

A Microsoft employee did ask for assistance, a couple of years ago, on a public mailing list, where the request was about how they could identify the IP ranges of a specific network provider, where the obvious reason for that, would sound to have been in order to block all traffic from that specific provider at once.

If you insist on email forwarding / email routing:

- Set up your own mail server behind the stage, such as e.g. Postfix (SMTP) + Dovecot (IMAP, POP3).

- john.doe@example.comjohn.doe@example.com will point to Cloudflare (or other forwarding/routing service).

- john.doe@example.comjohn.doe@example.com will forward to john.doe@internal.example.comjohn.doe@internal.example.com

- @internal.example.com@internal.example.com will be handled by your own mail server (e.g. the before-mentioned Postfix will take care of receiving from the forwarding service).

- Postfix will deliver the message internally to Dovecot, and your mail client will download the messages from Dovecot.

As you're in full control of the mail server handling @internal.example.com@internal.example.com, you can choose to whitelist the IP ranges for Cloudflare (or other forwarding/routing service) there.

You can also choose whether you want any spam filtering at all, or simply want to see everything that's coming in...

Unfortunately though, ... it will of course require some effort from you, ... but it's the only reliable way, if you insist on email forwarding / email routing.

Even AWS SES (in some regions) has problems with being on blocklists at times. The ap-south-1 region (India, Mumbai), is often ends up on a Microsoft blocklist. It's annoying.

While everyone is saying forwarding is bad, a lot of people indeed have the need of forwarding. It does not seem that the industry has come to an agreement on how to handle it properly. Simply blocking a range of IPs does not really solve the problem.

To add to this, you could skip the mail server part and receive the emails using workers and store them somewhere (R2 or somewhere else) - this way you don't need your own server to achieve this.

You could then make a JMAP worker to serve email to your client (if it's supported)

The 'priority' numbers before the domains for these MX records indicate preference; the lower 'priority' value is preferred. The server will always try mailhost1 first because 10 is lower than 20. In the result of a message send failure, the server will default to mailhost2.

Semi related, I'm having a pretty weird issue, where Office 365 marks my emails for the inbox, but personal Microsoft accounts mark it as spam.

Hi, i have an issue that im solving for my father in law. I don't know about this area so much so I need help.
His domain got bought up by someone else. Everything he was using it for was his E-MAIL. But now it doesn't work anymore. Tech support that was managing this for him told us to turn to Cloudflare to change NS info to "mailhub.siol.net" and he should get his email back on track.
I would really appriciate it if someone cold turn me in the right direction so I can get this problem solved.

If he has no control over the actual domain (someone else bought it) there is nothing that you can do to regain his previous@domain.com email. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding?

Well, I'm sorry the tech mislead you.

But, if the domain expires and it's registered by someone else, the only recourse you have is to ask the new owner if you could buy it from them.

But previous owners can't modify records or use any previous resources provided by the domain.

I will say you can look at the gTLD Lifecycle from ICANN.org: Depending on where the timeline falls, perhaps it's in Grace or Redemption periods?

Even though with the free 100K worker limit, even if you dedicated that quota solely to the Email Worker, would be well above e.g. the Gmail's receiving limit of 86400 messages / 24 hours, ...

... I still think the lack of a unlimited / "flat rate" Worker, or at least, some sort of cost control / limitation, would make some people avoid a such kind of set up.

But yeah, point was that you can't depend on $BIG_CORP's Free Mail, together with forwarding.

"modabot@modabot@" is failing, but other local parts aren't?

I would try some other tests, where you remove the "botbot" part, so you're sending e.g. with "moda@moda@", "support@support@", "ticket-12345678@ticket-12345678@", "noreply@noreply@", "unread@unread@", and see whether that makes a difference.

If you're also using Friendly From's, e.g. "modabotmodabot" in the following, you may also want to play around with and without the "botbot" part there:
