Outer Layer to Pair With Shirt/Tie
I have two winter events coming up where I normally wear a shirt and a tie. However I would wear just that being a budgeting and low-income young adult. Now I want an outer layer to make a complete ensemble but don’t want to spend the money on a suit right now. I’ve looked at sport coats but have a great pair of navy dress pants that I’ve heard is hard to pair sport coats with. So what else would you suggest? Looking at spending under $250.

i don't think navy pants are that difficult to pair, as with all things it depends on the sport coat, the pants, and the shirt/tie you're wearing (pics would help greatly)
the only thing i wouldn't do is try to wear a navy jacket but there's lot of options out there; it would help to narrow down your options by looking through #waywt or #inspiration to see what you like.
eBay for a gray tweed sport coat, aran sweater market or ebay for a shawl collar cardigan perhaps
Haven’t decided on the shirt color or tie yet either, but this is my tie collection.
Also, I need to purchase the dress shirt which is not coming from the $250
If you don’t have a white shirt, that’s a good place to start. Otherwise you’ve got tons of options. Aside from looking at inspiration here you could go to menswear sites and shop for blazers/sportcoats. I’d bet some of the models will have navy pants and you’ll see a combo you like. Then post it here and people can help you find places to buy for certain budgets. (I would worry about the tie last tbh.)
Yeah I’m sure I can match the tie. I probably do need a white shirt, but I never owned an outer layer to go with a shirt and tie and felt a white shirt by itself was too plain. I currently just own a standard blue dress shirt. Gray tweed seems like a good choice. Maybe like a medium gray?
Sounds great
I’d try to get a jacket darker than my pants but only because twitter menswear guy told me to
