sounds like a connectivity issue (maybe a firewall or something being too strict?)
you can use other tools like protonup-qt https://davidotek.github.io/protonup-qt/ and heroic can use the ones installed with it too

does in the directory showed Heroic Wine or Heroic Proton? If so you could just add version and choose whatever wine version you want to choose. If not you could create a custom directory and tell Heroic to use that directory

you could try download proton-ge if you wish to use proton ge
and then set the default settings in the Settings -> Game Defaults for game to use that version

I just managed to install a version of Proton through Heroic but I put it in the game defaults and nothing changes, I start the game and it doesn't run, I go into the game settings and the option to put Proton or Wine doesn't appear

the game defaults affects only new games, for games that are already installed you have to change the settings of the game itself
click the settings icon of the game and a game-specific dialog will show up

I got it from a pirated site but it worked normally a few days ago I'm afraid of saying the name of the site and getting banned
