use ge-proton with umu

Wine-GE is rather old now (last release is almost a year ago) and thus might not work correctly. Please follow these instructions on using GE-Proton with umu instead: 1. Head to the Wine Manager in Heroic, click the "Proton-GE" tab, and install "Proton-GE-Latest" 2. Enable umu in "Settings" (Heroic sidebar) -> "Advanced" -> "Use UMU as Proton runtime" Note: For a visual guide, see attached image 3. Head to the settings for your game(s) (icon on game card in library). In the "Wine Version" dropdown, select "Proton - Proton-GE-latest" 4. Rename your Wineprefix (path is shown in game settings), e.g. from current-name to current-name_bak. To clarify: Rename the actual folder on your hard drive, do not change the option in the game settings. Note: This will make game-specific configuration data (e.g. in-game settings or save files) unavailable. If this is an issue, let us know & we'll help you restore them.

harsh-harlequin
harsh-harlequin•4mo ago
I've tried Proton-GE-9.0.4, Proton-GE-latest, Proton-Hotfix and Proton-Experimental so far. Using Proton 9.0 now and getting at least a different error šŸ™‚ https://0x0.st/8P2r.log

quickest-silver
quickest-silver•4mo ago
yeah, it should be enabled by default, but I think it only enables it if installed and when turned on manually it actually installs the thing if needed
metropolitan-bronze
metropolitan-bronze•4mo ago
yeah, prior installation is required

proton-ge + umu is the way to go for running games, umu helps provide dependencdies and runtimes for games run with proton-ge also if it contains specific fixes for games it will auto install them
multiple-amethyst
multiple-amethyst•4mo ago
Enabling EOS overlay worked for me. Currently using Wine-latest though tried Proton with UMU before Is there a reason to use Proton +UMU even if the game is running fine under Wine? Like less resources used or something?
quickest-silver
quickest-silver•4mo ago
it's more a general recommendation than a requirement if your game works fine with wine it's totally fine to just continue using it the issue with wine-ge is that it was discontinued and the focus is ge-proton and umu, heroic will default to that combination in the future too, with this combination you can eventually use newer versions of ge-proton which may include fixes you need for different games or updates from wine, the specific benefits will depend on each game and what umu and ge-proton does for that game

metropolitan-bronze•4mo ago
umu provides a container runtime so you are always sure you have necessary libraries
sunny-green
sunny-green•4mo ago
Wine-ge due to age is also now failing to work in some cases. Since its no longer maintained ultimately it may just stop working

UMU is a runtime for Proton this is the only thing that is not opt in when it comes to Proton you should always use UMU with Proton

Are you online when you load the game? Humankind seems to require a online connection at the time of loading or it will not load.
