CPU Comparison (General Hardware)

Hey there,

Recently I've heard alot of differing comments regarding Minecraft's performance, some say it's single-threaded, others say it's not, I really can't seem to figure out the actual situation.

Currently I've got an i7-6700@3.40GHz (

4Cores 8 Threads

4Cores 8 Threads

), although I'm looking at purchasing a server with 2xXeon Silver 4110@2.10GHz (

16 Cores 32 Threads

16 Cores 32 Threads

).
Curious on the opinions between these two CPU setups.

The conclusion I've come to is the following:

i7-6700@3.40GHz

It won't be able to run several servers, although the servers it does run will be relatively high performance

2x Xeon Silver 4110@2.10GHz

It will be able to run a significantly larger number of servers, although they won't have as much performance as the i7 system.

I'm looking to get other opinions considering I don't really have a clue what I'm talking about hardware wise, and I could be insanely stupid for passing on the Xeons.

I actually have a few servers with that exact cpu for reference, the performance itself is fine, but realistically, a ryzen 5900x machine (or newer) would be much better

if minecraft isn’t the main focus, the xeon scalable based machines actually are pretty good. If it’s mainly for minecraft, maybe try finding a good deal a ryzen 5000 or newer machine

it’s also notable to mention that the xeon scalable machines are pretty power hungry, I believe mine draw ~350w full blast and there aren’t any SSDs

synthetic benchmarks are slightly better at giving a “guess” of performance, at least for single core workloads (ie: minecraft), but it’s a bit more complex in the real world because those xeon scalable CPUs support avx512, but consumers didn’t get avx512 until the ryzen 7000 series and only the intel i9-12900k has avx512 and newer consumer intel cpus don’t

At the moment I have 2 machines.

One with an

which is running Unraid, mainly for NAS storage, media servers, web servers, etc.
The other is the

i7-6700

system which is just running Ptero and some servers.

Ideally I'd like to have one machine to run everything.
Would the

well, the xeon gold machine would probably perform about the same as the i7-6700. A Ryzen 5900 would be slightly under 2x faster

yeah, I just personally probably wouldn't want any xeon machine older than the first gen scalable CPUs, everything else is pretty slow
