Hi, is it common that simple hello world cloydflare worker api has a 100~150 ms latency? I thought edge function would be ~50ms. Is it because cloudflare worker has cold start?

Hi. I have some DNS/certificate questions regarding workers. Here is our current setup:

We have a DNS that is NOT managed through cloudflare (and it is no option to make it managed by cloudflare).
We have a workder running on workers.devworkers.dev
We would like to use a custom domain for one of our workers, e.g. test.ourdomain.xyztest.ourdomain.xyz. I can add a CNAME record on our DNS to point to the workers.devworkers.dev url, but because there is no certificate for that it doesn't work.

I am aware of partial DNS setup which would solve this (because it is supported by Universal SSL), but it is Enterprise/Business only.

So my question is: Is there any way to connect a (cloudflare-exernal) custom domain to a worker without going for the Enterprise/Business option? Other services like firebase seem to support that.

I think if you connect a domain to Cloudflare you can use Cloudflare for SaaS to send traffic from your real domain through Cloudflare via the linked one. I’ve never done it but I think I’ve seen others here use it.

I have a website whose content partially depends on another website. Currently I have a Github workflow which invokes a deploy hook every day but this is not a permanent solution since it runs too often and can have up to 24 hours of content lag time. Is there a way to invoke a deploy hook for a different Pages instance a few minutes after a build finishes?

the GH workflow can also run hourly but i was hoping for a solution that would ping the deploy hook only when it's necessary as to provide less delay

We are currently discussing the possibility of using GitHub Enterprise Cloud with data residency, which would create a ghe.com subdomain. However, the APIs will remain the same.

Is it still possible to connect a GitHub account that exists under ghe.com and not on GitHub.com with automated builds?

Hello, does anyone know if there is an aggregate size limit for Workers Secrets? The documentation says a number limit of 64/128, and a size limit for each of 5KB. But after adding a few larger ones my project build doesn't even initialize - ends with : An internal error occurred. Please retry your build. If this problem persists, contact Cloudflare support.

When I remove some secrets, the build will start again (but ultimately fail because my needed secret isn't there).

Has anyone experienced this?

While I love building on workers, there are two major annoyances that seem easy to solve and I’ve heard from people over and over again so I thought I would share:

worker placement is annoying. There should be a “dumb” placement option which allows me to pin workers to a specific datacenter or at least small ish region. If I know where my database is running that is where my worker should run. Smart placement ends up being too smart for its own good. I want control over placement, give me control. I get the idea behind it, “it’s not ideal as soon as you start having read replicas around the world yada, yada, yada.” Most people don’t. Give me control.
While workers are nearly unbounded in terms of processing time, waitUntil is not. This blocks sooo many small background tasks. I know you can get around that with workflows and crons and queues and whatever, but all of that adds a tone of complexity because of what seems like such an arbitrary limitation.

I noticed that when I re-deploy a Cloudflare Pages project with Wrangler, it lets me know how many new files it sent. Since "0 files uploaded" is a touch worrying: it'll also update existing files whose contents has changed, right? My testing implies so, but I want to double check

Correct! The file is content hashed and tracked by Cloudflare. If that hash changes, Wrangler will re-upload that file

I'm not sure you can force fetch to do it, but you could always pass it through a DecompressionStreamDecompressionStream yourself
