Nitration

Nitration of Phenol with conc HNO3 gives picric acid but with poor yield. What could be the reason for poor yield

You get ortho-nitrophenol as first major product for single nitration because of H-bonding stability. Each successive nitration reduces electron density on benzene, and also creates more steric hindrance for electrophiles to attack.
