Advice sought; Trying to tune TMC2209

I think I am severely confused here and hoping that the answer is simple. I have been getting OTP flags on Z1 and Z2, and after a Gstat on Extruder 0, I thought I had best check the VRef of the drivers. This is where I think I am getting confused and if someone could help, I'd be greatly appreciative. Machine info is VCore4 - 400mm
When I pull a driver out and hook it up to a 5 or 12V source, I get no signal on my multimeter when probing the VRef and Gnd pin. This is the same on two of the drivers, I thought it best to stop there and ask.
Now, with a bit more reading, is it true that because on the VCore4 the drivers are operated in UART mode that the VRef set on the potentiometer is overridden by a motor current set in RatOS? This would then make the manual tuning irrelevant??

TMC2209 is controlled via RatOs for current. Although I am unsure that the potentiometer gets overriden, there is no need. Use RatOs to change current. However, the default settings in "performance" mode should be 100% adequate on a stock steup
